Description A lot of artists struggle trying to figure out how to draw the webbing on Spider-Man's mask. It is particularly difficult to understand how the webbing in the front works with the mask from the sides and back, so here is a step-by-step that features a a popular formula for doing the webbing. In the old days of comicdom, such details were simply fudged, and seem to change from panel to panel, but we all know we can do better than that. To that end, here's a working model to consider.

Certainly it's okay to do the webbing on the maks your own way, but I hope you'll use this step-by-step as a basic guideline. For those who have struggled with such details, I hope this will help you make heads or tails of things.

Happy drawing!

Very cool! All I ever do artist-wise is doodle, but this is still neat to look at.

When i finally got the hang of Spidey, I wanted to draw him all the time. What I figured was that the webbing radiated out from his nose and went out from there. This curving of the lines then drawing the arches makes so much sense, i think it's going to make things a bit easier to draw the web head=] I just need to learn the leather/spandex/reflective costuming a bit more and I'll be more comfortable=]

Good idea, this would've been helpful when I was trying to draw him when I was a kid.

I know what ya mean, Ace. Same for me. I just sort of faked my way through it back then. Heh.

Gotta miss the Jack Kirby days... Although almost all the faces looked the same.

That could be said of today's artists as well though. Kirby had the dynamic energy, powerful figures and storytelling magic. That's where his strength's rested.

True. I once borrowed a How To Draw Marvel characters book by Kirby (or someone who was REALLY great at Kirby) and it really showed that almost every human head looked the same. After you put hair or eyebrow detail on, it's hard to notice, but still.
