Description
February 2012Over the years and after everything I’ve drawn and painted, and despite my policy to never revisit a particular motif, the sun god is the Mother of all exceptions. This time I re-painted her for an upcoming exhibition in hope to maybe sell her, ‘cause I’m still not particularly happy about the thought of losing the “original” painting back from 2009.
Technical stuff: Acrylic on cotton canvas, 45x55 cm (18,8x23 in), about 20 hours of work - not including general preparing, cleaning up after every session or just waiting for paint to dry.
Poetry time!
Soaring ever so far and high
Roaming endless endarkened sky
A value greater than mere gold
So much older than prior told
Friend and foe shield your eye
You - stand up and heed the call
Open your eyes and spread to all
Gentle blessing every morning
Every setting deep red warning
Sparing neither big nor small
Always in centre - I never run
A mighty force defeated by none
Not like the planets turning
Body and soul forever burning
Alone and one - I am the sun

When I first looked at this I thought: "Did someone really carve that out of a jack-o-lantern?" This is amazing how you made it glow with just paint. Beautiful work.

No jack-o-lanterns in sight here, just paint paint and paint.
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it.

Once again she pops up the little sun god. (You can tell this comes from one who's tired of winter now. ) Glad you liked her. She makes an impact.

Haha.... As always it's the issue with warm and cold.

Even more warmer colours!
Well, you already know that the original was (and is) one of my favourites of yours. But I have to admit that in this redux you have managed to make those colours of fire even more better looking.
I can't help but think that it could have been really great looking if you could have managed to "print" the text so that it would have circled the outer rim of the sun here. Like runes blending to that white edge. But perhaps it would be harder to make than it actually sounds. Just a thought.

Hehe... She's just as glowing in reality as well. She burns!
I have some mixed feelings about the different versions. I like the body of this one much much better but I still strangely enough prefer the slightly muted sun surface of the old one.
I think text in direct contact with the motif would spoil it but I got a bit creative and painted the poem along the edge of the canvas (see the last pics in the tutorial) so I could include it at least somehow.
