My first tutorial!My guide to how I make moving icons/gifs. Beginners-friendly, because I figured it would be easier for most people, and if you already know the general workings of Gimp and other similar programs you can probably just skip to the saving part at step 13.
As promised, the [link] to the free download.
By the way, you can download this file to view it later, but warning it's quite a big one.

so apparently gimp is incompatible to my computer, is there another free program i can use? the only time it has worked was for about a week and it stopped loaded again. literally. i cant get past the loading fonts. it just freezes up after that.

That's alright
It's quite simple, you just drag the edges of the frame inwards until you have the part of the pic that you want. Or if you want to crop from the left or top, press ctrl a to select the image, & drag it around. Hope that helps!

Does it show a preview of frame by frame when you edit the milliseconds?

Unfortunatly, no. You have to save it first then view & go back if you need to change it.

I don't have those programs. Photoshop is really expensive and I've heard Gimp is complicated---so that leaves me out.

Yeh photoshop is expensive (I don't have it either, that's why I use Gimp)
It's not that complicated! It's quite similar to photoshop actually, just with the buttons in slightly different places, and a few less features (that I probably wouldn't even know about or use even if I had photoshop). It might take a little while for you to get used to it, and to work out what button does what, but seriously, it's not hard

It's 1.6 MB. Not the biggest of files, but quite large for a single image.

This is a very nice tutorial. I give it five stars. You explained every step and provided pictures. I'm familiar with GIMP, but didn't realize you could do animation in in (fail) so this is pretty nifty. Also your text was easy to read and the tutorial did not have to be downloaded to be readable.
