I'm having a really difficult time getting the striped effect. Is there an easier way of making them? When i get to Polar Coordinates part, my colors look like a distorted square not a spin.

since i'm not able to see what your gradient looks like, i can't be sure, but i think that you may be missing a step ot two when making the gradient - you shouls be able to see stripes begore you start applying fliters. also, betseen the stripes-stage and the polar-coordinates-stage you have to apply a called filter Pixelize.
Here is a newer version of the tutorial: [link] (I have split the instruction into 2 parts - one about how to make the gradient, and another about the whirl. So, click first on the gradients tab, and then on the whirl tab). Take a look at it, and make sure that you follow all the steps. If you still have problems, let me know at which step they occur.
good luck

Do you really have to do 72 layers to get it to spin?

jepp. you can do more, if you wish .
Or you can write a script to make the layers for you ...

Nice tutorial.

thanks!
now you know
i think there are some useful tutorials on youtube about how to use the editor - but you learn a lot if you just sit and experiment with it.

It's funny because I've used something similar in photoshop in school and I remember wishing I could use something similar in Gimp. XD
Gimp never ceases to amaze me.

hehe I never keep up with the updates.
The reason I got the newest now is because I recently got my own laptop. heh.

i heard that a new version is 'just around the corner' - maybe by the time it's actually out, you'll need a new laptop, and then you'll have the incentive to get it .
and i have to start transferring to photoshop - huh - why don't schools recognize gimp ...

hehe maybe. I might get it anyway.
Your school don't recognise Gimp?! My school even had Gimp on most computers. It was a very old version of it, but still. X)

Do you at least get some kind of discount? Because otherwise that's harsh.

yes, there is a special student price, but it's harsh anyway.
well, there is positive side to it as well - once you buy it, you'll have it 'for life'. And 'statens lΓ₯nekasse for utdanning' is very helpful .

Hey! You're from Norway! Cool, I'm from Sweden. (heh kinda understood the norwegian )
In Sweden students gets some money from the state every month. This money is supposed to go to school books and whatever you might need for school. Also some companies offers a student price as you talked about.

yes, it's nice of them . but the case of art students is a bit extreme, even when there's free education - by the end of next week i have to get myself a slr camera + tripod and the most important parafernalia. i managed to put off this step for almost 10 years, so now i feel weak in the knees - it feels like starting a new life, almost.
