Description
“For the 35th day of the Feature of Creatures, I bring you an uncommon but important member living below sea levels, the Scyphozoa.”“Scyphozoa; [Sahy-fuh-zoh-uh]”
“Merfolk aren’t the only species of importance under the depths of the ocean, as below the water’s surface lies the intriguing Scyphozoa. In similar aspects of the Merfolk resembling various fishes, the Scyphozoa resembles various species of jellyfish. To an even greater extent, as they are more jellyfish than Humanoid. Their tentacles, sometimes acting as hair, are completely controllable by the Scyphozoa. Moreover, the majority of Scyphozoa can sting through their tentacles, fingers, and legs. Scyphozoa are interesting as they play a major role in the ocean waters, maintaining the ecosystem and food chain by protecting endangered species and over hunting overpopulated species. In the modern day, many researchers and biologists attempt to understand the physicalities and properties of Scyphozoa.”
“Jellies; [Jel-ee]”
“The first and friendliest variant of Scyphozoa, Jellies live close to the surface of the water in the Sunlight Zone. Common Jellies have an average lifespan of 90 years, maturing at 10 years. Average height is 5 feet and 7 inches or 1.70 meters, although it can vary depending on the subvariant. Physically, Jellies are squishy, soft, and relatively harmless, being the only variant to not sting. They have no fingers as well, being simple numbs that function similarly. Jellies are surprisingly fast, fluttering about the ocean in a comical fashion. Despite the Humanoid appearance, Jellies, and all Scyphozoa, have no bones and are even hollow sometimes. Jellies are very sweet, but dim, floating about the waters without a care in the world. Although seeming like easy prey, Jellies are incredibly fast at regenerating. Socially, Jellies live in large smacks, floating about until something approaches them. Jellies are also known to house small fish in their bodies for mural protection. Although safe, divers are taught to be careful as light fixtures attract tons of them, either drowning the diver or simply moving into harm’s way. Jellies enjoy the presence of Humans and most Merfolk.”
“Boxed; [Boksd]”
“A more feared variant of Scyphozoa, Boxed have acquired quite the reputation for its nature and behaviors. This variant lives in both Sunlight and Twilight Zones of the ocean, although more commonly found on the coasts of canyons and similar biomes. Boxed have an average lifespan of 100 years with maturation at 18. Additionally they have an average height of 7 feet and 8 inches or 2.34 meters. Physically recognizable by their square bell and build, these Scyphozoa are notorious for their venom, both incredibly dangerous and readily available. Moreover, Boxed are capable of fast controlled speeds, propelling themselves up to four knots in speed. Their bodies are nigh invisible in water, allowing them to camouflage themselves without effort. Living in small groups or alone, Boxed Scyphozoa have interesting social behaviors. When hunted or hunting they are incredibly hostile and cruel, trip wiring the waters around their target in their venomous appendages then wrapping the target to sting them rapidly. However, in any other interaction with another species they are completely different, being much more cautious and considerate. Making careful movements so as to not accidentally sting others, they’ll even wear gloves and hairnets in social gatherings.”
“Solar; [Soh-ler]”
“A popular variant of Scyphozoa, Solar Scyphozoa, is a rare sight to see. Solar Scyphozoa are found in similar locations are Boxed Scyphozoa, that being Sunlight and Twilight Zones. Solar Scyphozoa have an average lifespan of 120 years and reach maturity at 20. Additionally, they have an average height of 8 feet or 2.44 meters for their upper body and a lower body length of 80 feet or 24.38 meters. Physically, these mystical Scyphozoa are similar to lamias, only these have much longer tails. Solar Scyphozoa have long bodies in general, bearing longer arms. It has a very puffy and soft texture, warm to the touch to boot. These Scyphozoa are magically inclined to Inferna Magic, able to use it effectively both underwater and without physical drawbacks like the Glocktopuses. Moreover, Solar Scyphozoa are religious in nature, worshipping the sun and Sulis. Socially, Solar Scyphozoa live alone, simply floating about or spreading the word of their worship. Solar Scyphozoa have a good relationship with Soli Elves.”
“Lunar; [Loo-ner]
“In a similar aspect to Lunalins and Soli, Lunar Scyphozoa are the Lunalins to Solar Scyphozoa’s Soli. Lunar Scyphozoa are commonly found in deeper waters, Twilight and Midnight Zones, however they are more often found near the Lunar biome. These Scyphozoa have an average lifespan of 120 years, with a maturation at 20. Lunar Scyphozoa have an average height of 6 feet and 4 inches or 1.93 meters. Physically, Lunar Scyphozoa are unique to the other variants, as they are not only bioluminescent, but they boast unique limbs and much shorter tentacles. Additionally, Lunar Scyphozoa have a strong sense of Aquanna and Astral Magic. Interestingly still, this variant has much harder skin, crystallization occurring at joints, this is believed to be due to the Lunar biome. It is said that special Lunar Scyphozoa born in The Lunar Festival would bear an entire starmap on their skin. Socially, Lunar Scyphozoa live in small groups, lurking below the depths until something approaches them. Moreover, these variants are incredibly curious, constantly intrigued by the surface and the Lunar Biome itself.”
“Immortal; [Ih-mawr-tl]”
“The final variant of Scyphozoa, and the most unique by far, the Immortal Scyphozoa. Found in the deep waters of the Twilight and Midnight Zones, this variant is effectively immortal. Their life cycle consists of them returning back into eggs, then to juveniles, then adults, then into eggs again. As long as the Immortal Scyphozoa receives enough resources needed to live, they can live indefinitely. Immortal Scyphozoa can grow up to be 6 feet or 1.83 meters in height. Due to their properties, most Immortal Scyphozoa are found as juveniles, with the wisdom of grand elders. Although physically weak, Immortal Scyphozoa are incredibly smart, capable of detecting magic and learning how the Ancient Magic flows through the world. Having natural affinities to Astral Magic helps this endeavor to feel the passage of live marching onward. Most live to be monks in the depths of the ocean, while others become scholars in different civilizations entirely. Socially, Immortal Scyphozoa have the closest relation to Human Nature, the desire to learn and create from the unknown. They live in small groups, with a knack for wandering into other civilizations. However, due to their constantly changing appearance, they are often barred from certain activities and respect, making them grouchy all the time.”
“The Scyphozoa are unnecessarily complicated, being brainless however capable of complex emotions, some Scyphozoa bearing teeth, and how they cannot get themselves tangled with all the different limbs working at once. It’s already confusing enough with regular jellyfish, Scyphozoa simply makes it worse. Thankfully many willing subjects emerged for biological exams and testing, hopefully some answers will emerge. Nonetheless, aside from the Immortal variant, most Scyphozoa don’t do much. They are pioneers of living life to the fullest, as my kids would say, Scyphozoa are simply vibing.”
