Rupert Bear comes up with his plan to prevent Toby Badger's assassination and talks about his scheme to Toby and the other two members of his band the Nutwood Ninnies, Dusty Gore and Joe Sloth.

Eventually, the Nutwood Ninnies perform with an audience consisting of everyone in Nutwood that Rupert could get to participate. Rupert catches a suspicious character charging toward Toby, but finds out two startling revelations: 1, the shadowy figure is The Great Mephisto, a criminal who once tried to hypnotize everyone in Nutwood into giving him their valuables while they were sleepwalking, and 2, his attempt to kill Bill Badger's brother was all just a ruse to catch Rupert off guard for his attempt at revenge.

As it so happens, the Great Mephisto's scheme was to hypnotize Rupert into suffering the torment of his inner demons.
