once an admired geisha, she accepted a bouquet one day not knowing it was from her jealous rival.... when she opened it, the magical venus fly traps ate her alive and now her spirit wonders china offering her bouquet of flowers *evil laugh*

The fact that they're monarch butterflies makes me think of genetically modified crops... tempting and easy for humans, but no good for the butterflies.

Also reminds me of Isabel Allende for some reason.

D: Monarch butterflies can't eat genetically modified crops? I didn't know that.. that's very sad.

GM corn (in many cornfields along the migratory route) gives off pollen that is toxic to monarchs :/

Oh.. I feel very sorry for those poor butterflies. I always thought it's a shame that we don't see as many butterflies as we used to.

Gads a few people wrote a whole short story for this! o.O Well I'm not going to trample this field with any ideas I come up with (which would probably be influenced anyway). That aside, this is completely gorgeous! Among my favorite of your recent works. There's so much depth to the concept and admire you for exploring such works that people can read into. The girl is beautiful herself and I adore the Kimono and butterflies. Nice dark forest feel to it as well.

It's amazing

But I agree, that the beautiful woman is luring the prey into its deadly trap. I'm looking at the picture again, and I see some butterflies were already too late...A very clever way to get food.

I love it! >.<

My eyes were first drawn to her sad face. Then I noticed the flowers in her hands... my eyes followed the red ribbons/veins? down and out, and noticed the butterflies being eaten. Rather creepy, but I love the composition. I also the blurry corners, giving a distorted perspective. I can almost feel myself being drawn towards her, because of this. Rather good piece if you ask me.

My interpretation: She was a young and beautiful princess who was destined for greatness and wealth. All the princes in the land begged for her hand in marriage but she refused them all as she knew she could never settle for one alone and was only in love with herself. For hours she would stare at herself in the mirror, preening her beautiful black hair... until she caught the sight of a butterfly outside the castle window. It was the first butterfly she had ever seen and chased it as she was entranced.

She followed it to the darkest part of the castle grounds, where the butterfly landed on the fingertip of a pale and wrinkled old man. His eyes were fierce like untamed fire but all she saw was the beauty he held in his hands.

"Tell me how it stays so beautiful throughout its life! That's an order!" She asked the man, he smiled at the foolish princess.
"Meet me outside the castle walls tonight in the meddow of flytraps and I'll tell you." He purred.

That night the princess went outside the castle walls, her dress ripping on sharp branches. Until at last she reached the meddow and the man was waiting for her, robed in grey.
"Tell me how I can stay beautiful forever and have the hearts of all men." She asked him, he bent down and plucked a flytrap from the ground and observed it.
"You wish to stay young and beautiful forever?" He asked.
"Of course! Now grant me my wish you fool or I'll have you arrested." She said. The old man smiled and waved his hand, millions of butterflies erupted from the grassy meddow and swarmed around the girl. She cried out in terror and anger as the old man transformed into a handsome and powerful sorcerer.
"Only in death do we remain as we were." He said, the butterflies closed in on her in a whirlwind of beauty that she craved. The king and queen never saw their daughter again and they didn't really mind.

Some nights if you are young and good-looking and are wandering a path alone, you may see her in the meddow. Holding in her hands your favourite flower, but do not take them from her, for she holds pure vanity in her hands and she'll drag you down with her.

Looks like a forest creature, just like a fairy or something else. A flower with human appearance, beautiful but poisonous....reminds me a sad princess caged in her castle...I don't know...^^''

Love the colours BTW, you're very skilled and talented!

It looks sort of like... Don't trust someone because they are pretty? Like, she's lovely, clearly so, but to get close you'd have to go through a bed of carnivorous... flowers...

I don't know. But I really like it!

Skipping all the other comments for the moment...

What I see is a woman, who while quite lovely upon first glance, is nothing more than a trap herself -- perhaps an evil spirit? Ah, anyway...

She looks like the type who would lure men with her face, and once they got close enough she would devour them.

My initial thoughts on this is that the lady is being punished, perhaps for being too vain, by being turned into a tree or other type of plant. The only way to escape her fate is if she can get someone else to take her place...

Awesome color mood. Plunges the scene into a dim, gritty mood, which fits perfectly! (: Hmm, she could be a spirit which lures the butterflies with that mysterious bouquet of flowers. Perhaps only butterflies could detect the scent, and they are caught unaware by the numerous venus fly traps in waiting. Maybe she is a venus fly trap spirit. Or you have a more symbolic approach towards this?

She was walking alone through a dark forest seeking adventure in her life.
She had ran from home that morning, she was the only daughter of a very rich family and thus over-protected. She was bored of her life, that's why she ran.

In the forest she bumped into an old lady, who introduced herself as a witch, and told her she'd grant her wish.
She didn't believe the lady was a witch, and she was spoiled and selfish. She thought of making fun of the lady, because she was obviously making fun of her. A witch! How childish did this foolish old lady think she was? Young, maybe, but not so stupid to believe in fairytales! Hah!

"Oooooh, I wish the witch of the Forest was young and pretty, not Old and Wrinkled!" and she started giggling.

"Ahh.. thank you. I was cursed to wander through this forest an eternity, until someone would have the Heart to wish something for someone else but themselves. My curse has finally been lifted, thanks to you. Now I can live my elderly days peacefully under sunlight. This is the final wish I shall grant, and to thank you for this generous wish, I shall make you the new witch of the Forest. You shall learn how wonderful it feels to make people happy. And you shall learn how selfish people are by always wishing something for themselves. And only after you finally stop wishing freedom for yourself, and start wishing to see those smiles you create on people's faces, will someone come to you with an unselfish wish that lifts the curse from upon you."

And she was cursed to be the new witch of the forest, waiting for the day that someone would set her free~~~
