Description This is how I feel about most of my relationships right now.
The words underneath are from a poem by Andrienne Rich:
Diving into the Wreck:
"First having read the book of myths,
and loaded the camera,
and checked the edge of the knife-blade,
I put on
the body-armor of black rubber
the absurd flippers
the grave and awkward mask.
I am having to do this
not like Cousteau with his
assiduous team
aboard the sun-flooded schooner
but here alone.

There is a ladder.
The ladder is always there
hanging innocently
close to the side of the schooner.
We know what it is for,
we who have used it.
Otherwise
it is a piece of maritime floss
some sundry equipment.

I go down.
Rung after rung and still
the oxygen immerses me
the blue light
the clear atoms
of our human air.
I go down.
My flippers cripple me,
I crawl like an insect down the ladder
and there is no one
to tell me when the ocean
will begin.

First the air is blue and then
it is bluer and then green and then
black I am blacking out and yet
my mask is powerful
it pumps my blood with power
the sea is another story
the sea is not a question of power
I have to learn alone
to turn my body without force
in the deep element.

And now: it is easy to forget
what I came for
among so many who have always
lived here
swaying their crenellated fans
between the reefs
and besides
you breathe differently down here.

I came to explore the wreck.
The words are purposes.
The words are maps.
I came to see the damage that was done
and the treasures that prevail.
I stroke the beam of my lamp
slowly along the flank
of something more permanent
than fish or weed

the thing I came for:
the wreck and not the story of the wreck
the thing itself and not the myth
the drowned face always staring
toward the sun
the evidence of damage
worn by salt and away into this threadbare beauty
the ribs of the disaster
curving their assertion
among the tentative haunters.

This is the place.
And I am here, the mermaid whose dark hair
streams black, the merman in his armored body.
We circle silently
about the wreck
we dive into the hold.
I am she: I am he

whose drowned face sleeps with open eyes
whose breasts still bear the stress
whose silver, copper, vermeil cargo lies
obscurely inside barrels
half-wedged and left to rot
we are the half-destroyed instruments
that once held to a course
the water-eaten log
the fouled compass

We are, I am, you are
by cowardice or courage
the one who find our way
back to this scene
carrying a knife, a camera
a book of myths
in which
our names do not appear."

*edit
Now that some time is past; this piece of artwork is largely about being torn between two people who both love you, and trying to find your place between without hurting any one.
It's not about cheating, or leaving one person for another, it's about wading through the muddled darkness of each others' hearts, trying to discover that you are allowed to have of each other; how to trust and how to be trustworthy without lying to your heart.

Thank you for asking, I would be honored if you got this as a tattoo. My one request is that if you get it, please post photos of tattoo for me or send them to me by email. So many people ask me about getting my art as tattoos, then promise they'll send me pictures and never do. It really makes me sad. Also if you post pictures online, please put a link back to my page! And thank you again for asking!

This is really beautiful.

Really?

A lot of people say that. I guess I'm not really sure why. I just don't adhere exactly to the styles I like, and if it looks foolish or poorly done sometimes I don't mind. On the other hand, you really look like you've got your shit together, with neatly cut hair and painstakingly applied painted-on eyebrows. Half the time, I'm wearing the same thing I did yesterday, although it's a really weird and glamorous same thing. I mean, shit, my un-bleached, un-dyed roots have been showing for like... two weeks now, and I've still not fixed it.

The grass is always greener, I guess. Being more dada means being less together.

haha that's great that you think i look immaculate! i would say that when i first started drawing on my eyebrows it was painstaking, now it only takes me like a couple minutes tops and half the time they are like crooked or something XD
and i wear the shirt i slept in half the time too! yes yes the grass is always greener!

Hahahaha... I often wonder "do all the other gawffs think I like idiotic and non-gawffik? O noes!!!"
Then I look at the sea of identical girls in black dresses with silver jewelry and faux-dreadlock pigtails, smirk, and get over myself. I'm much closer to the deathrock style, of course, but I have to remain a step removed from that as well. And I know that some people - a lot of people? - think I look stupid. But when did the punk and post-punk subcultural movements all stop being about creativity and start being about wearing the "goth uniform" or the "deathrock uniform" or the "psychobilly uniform" or the "crust punk uniform?" Isn't that just silly? Isn't it contradictory to what we were going for in the first place, to have a community in which we can explore our darker sides in a creative fashion, and be more comfortable with and accepting of each other as a result? WOULD NICK CAVE APPROVE???!!!11

Nick Cave would not approve.

Then again, Nick Cave looks like a middle-aged Mexican cowboy nowadays.
