Description Thoughts: Yet another set of studies of the character Link, from TRON: Uprising.

Quite little is known of him, and his appearances are rare. Though shy and somewhat literally lackluster, taking his qualities into account, they point toward a long endurance through misfortune, and also a watchful nature, despite how many characterize him as a slow thinker.

I wanted to attempt to capture that withdrawn nature or attitude of his, perhaps also an air of fatigue. This set seems a little too scattered to really capture Link's essence.

Details: A set of exercise sketches.

Materials: Sketchbook paper, mechanical pencil, and 4B/8B graphite stick, .1 ink pen,  watercolor, and correction fluid.

More epic emotions from our friend Link. You're really good at drawing characters in contemplative moods. When I attempt such feats I always end up making the character look like they have indigestion or something. I also love the little Link peeking around the corner of the page. Too cute!

I can easily say that the one segment of Link peering around the corner (only to be surprised by something) was the most compulsive of the lot, and I'm glad to have shared it.

There's a certain clear sadness and contemplativeness about Link, but also, given that he's said that he's never told information, likely also a meek watchfulness or skittishness as well, I'd imagine. But, as an individual and artist, they say that one can most easily draw things that resonate well with one's own qualities; further than that, I cannot say, except to speak of 'Artists's Luck.' Like many an artist, all I tend to see in such sketches are my own errors in rendering.

He also seems to have a somewhat darker skintone in general, though clearly not as pronounced as Able, but just as dark as Zed (unless I am mistaken). I find that this small factor adds a sort of interesting slant, as him literally being a character left to background-shadows; a kind of blending-in with that quality.

I can't say that I am at ease with how I render his expressiveness (or any character's expressiveness). Due to his tall cranium, and that odd form or shape to his nose, coupled with those expressive, thin eyebrows and rather large, earnest eyes, rendering Link on the small-scale of sketching can sometimes (actually, almost always) be a challenge.

I agree and good, insightful observations about Link. As you will see, I am hoping to integrate/interpret these characteristics as factors of his past. I agree with 'Artist's Luck' as well. When I really need something to look good it ends up looking....meh. I've found that when I'm not trying, sometimes, it goes better. Just my luck.

I think you may be right about Link's skin tone. I've never noticed that. But you're also right about him being in the background and I find it interesting that he is often, literally, in the shadows during most scenes. Yes, Link has some fabulous eyebrows. I am so used to drawing characters with angular ones that whenever I come to him I have to make an effort to arch them upwards instead of down or horizontally.
