Part One of my entry for the Rukia's Birthday Contest: The Us that's Not Us for the Ichiruki FC on BA.

Holy. Crap. I am never, ever, ever doing anything like this ever again ever, this took so long you guys. I just had this story I wanted to tell and I thought it would just be an easy thing to do two or three pages of backstory and then it became seven pages in my sketchbook not including the final image and then it had to be colored and the images combined and oh my goodness. I think I'm going to go on sabbatical after this.

ANYWAY. This is the "princess and knight" theme for the contest, obviously, and this is their story condensed into a very few images. I like to think that Ichigo did a favor for the royal family by total accident and was made a knight of the realm for it. Then, shortly after his instatement, Rukia comes home after an arranged marriage (to AU!Kaien, of course, who is tragically far too in love with AU!Kaien'sWife to possibly marry another woman) falls through, and hey presto! Boy meets girl, boy accidentally almost stabs girl, girl cons boy into buying her a new library of terrible romance novels. Just your average fairytale.

And of course, they have to hang out again sometime, just so she can tell him what happened in the books, and then it turns from "sometime" to "almost every day," and somewhere in there it becomes more than friends, less than lovers.

Until they do something about that, of course. Part Two here!

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention: Rukia's line about dropping the point in third is a line from The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner. Because she is awesome and that book needs to be read by everyone.
