Why do Reapers wear masks?

During their work, Reapers move back and forth between the World of the Living and the World of the Dead. Although they do everything in their power to remain unnoticed, there is always a small chance that they might be seen by a living human.

If this happens, the magical item known as the Reaper's Mask activates. The Mask casts a spell on the human's mind that causes the human to forget they ever saw the Reaper. The human's mind is unharmed after the memory fades away, leaving the Reapers to continue their important work.

Each mask is unique, giving a hint at the Reaper's personality or background.

Slayer Reapers like Howl and Hollow wear darker masks that cover more of their facial features. This makes them more intimidating to the undead beings they fight in battle.

Despite their menacing demeanors, Hollow and Howl are actually cheerful and friendly.

Even when wearing their masks they consider it important to smile.

Many of my Deviant friends have requested to see what the Reapers would look like without their masks on. Each one of the Reapers will make an appearance in this series over time so you can see their faces without the magic getting in the way.
