Does anyone even remember the classic R-Type?
The series still has a very huge fanbase and a multitude of sequels and remakes, but I found that many never even played the original one.
Well, I'm one of those dinosaurs who actually got to play it at the arcade, and DAMN was it hard, and the difficulty still holds up too. I can still remember the amount of coins we used to throw into this machine, the frustration of defeat as well as the feeling of accomplishment when we actually managed to clear a stage (though truth be told, back then I never got past Stage 4). But the thing I remember the most was the awesome Stage 1 Boss, which was this grotesque mix between a xenomorph and nightmarish-fetus-thingie, it was nothing like we've ever seen before in those types of games (the bosses in shmups back then were usually just bigger ships or something), and this screen filling alien abomination was certainly a memorable design.
