I thought about it before (long time ago, since I'm gay so obviously it doesn't matter lol) and I can only think of 2 reasons it's a meaningful concept-- 1. you've never had sexual (genital) contact with another person, in any fashion, so you are 'chaste' and 2. you come from a time and culture in which females could be stoned if they didn't bleed on their wedding night, because a non-intact hymen is a symbol that you haven't 'belonged' to another man.
And yes the fact that the hymen can be torn in other ways, as well as sometimes it just sort of... goes away on its own, makes the thing kind of a moot point in many cases, lol.
Also, if you're guy and you have sex with another guy, are you a virgin? Is it different for men? And if you're either a guy or girl and use um, 'toys' does that de-virginize you too?
