Jay had once again been spending his day at the Nook in a corner of the library, silently watching the other Nooklings as they laughed and ran around the building. Lately he’d been keeping to himself more, not joining in on games or activities. He was content with sticking to the sidelines and not being a bother to anyone, just combing his way through the various shelves of books. Sometimes others in the library would try to make small talk with him, but they’d quickly lose interest from his non-verbal responses.

He’d gotten a surprise when his mother Lori had come to pick him up that afternoon with news after having finished her job. She seemed excited, and after telling him a few vague details, quickly let him hop on her back to fly back to their cabin. Jay sat on the couch as the feathery blue biped raced off to her room, only to come back a few moments later carefully holding something bundled in a light blue blanket in her wings. The blue Wynling’s eyes went wide when she tugged back the blanket to reveal a pale shelled egg nestled in the blanket.

Lori explained the story of how she’d come to find the egg abandoned out in the woods behind the cabin, and how she’d decided to take it back with her and care for it. Jay, mesmerized, brushed his claws against the smooth surface of the egg, gingerly holding it in his arms. It was light, surprisingly so. He’d held eggs while helping Alma at the Nook, and they’d all been much heavier than this one despite being the same size. Lori seemed quite happy with her son’s reaction; she’d worried he’d be upset with her for making such a sudden decision. However, she’d recently been doing well at her job and has just received a promotion to the lead position, so they were relatively well off financially.

As Lori walked off to start making dinner, Jay curled up next to the egg on the couch, caressing the surface as he fixed its blanket. The pale grey shell was warm under his touch, and he swore he could hear a heartbeat within if he pressed his ear to the shell. It was one of the most beautiful eggs he’d ever seen. His orange eyes flicked over it lovingly, already quite attached to it. What a precious little thing they now had, the little life that was growing before them.

Jay felt a pang of sadness run through his heart, and he reached out to draw the egg to his fluffy chest in a hug, treating it as delicately as if it were made of glass. He’d failed before, let the life of the poor red Wynling drop away to the shadows. He couldn’t save him, but he swore right here and now he wouldn’t let that happen again. He’d protect this egg and the baby within with his life, make sure it knew nothing but love and safety. He wouldn’t let harm come this Wynling, his new sibling.

The fluffy blue male looked down at the bundled egg in his arms, lifting it up to press a light boop on the shell. This egg was his little prince or princess, and he would be the most loyal guard ever for them so they could live a happy life. They’d never know the fear, pain and uncertainty that raced through the hearts of everyone from the deelagun attack and plague, he’d make sure of it. He’d be the best protector, brother, and friend he could possibly be to make up for the times he couldn’t before now.

Jaybird’s found a new purpose! He’s sadly still a bit self-depricating and critical in his survivor’s guilt, but this is a new chapter to help him brighten up a little. He will never be the same Jay he was before the deelagun, but life’s looking up again. He will indeed protect his little princess with every inch of his being <3

I really like how this came out, I think his pose and expression is adorable
