Description
This is my new character Remeroth Banneroth. Also, I have to thank a million here. I thought I lost this image when I got some of my bloody goo on the face, but with the help of some of her acrylic ink and a little experimentation we figured it out! It isn't exactly the same as before but it's certainly workable, and the mistake isn't noticeable unless you've really seen it before hand. :3

Simply amazing! I love the shading, pose, and...well...EVERYTHING!
Is this all done with graphite and possibly some charcoal? (I'm totally off, arent I? XD )
This cracter of yers be sho shmexy, I think I must simply rape him and completely corrupt his mind.

Just some .3 mechanical pencils with leads of varying hardnesses (H4, H2, HB, B2). It's a very slow and refined process... but I dunno... I enjoy the control, and when I'm drawing for something or someone I care about... I enjoy the long journey into completion, it makes it feel like you invested in something good. Hahaha, but don't expect to be done in a single sitting... or two... or three!
Hahaha... he is pretty cool huh?! How do you like that little belly? I dunno, I'm really having fun experimenting with different body types, and as I grow as an artist I can really appreciate people in all their shapes and forms! He is quite a dashing fellow though... and he looks sooooft!

I knoooow... Lemurs are love, along side giant anteaters and raptors with me.
OH, I'll be sure to post more of him... :3 but I'm a little intimidated with how complicated his design may be too... You may not see so many epic illustrations such as this, but that's how I make all my new characters -- overly complicated... and then I refine them a bit more later.

Haha, yes, the both of us have been lemur geaks in crime for like a year now. And we will muster a lemur army to take over the world, lolz.
The only reason I actually put up art on my DA account, because I know at least she will look at any lemur scribbles I upload XD
Rofl, Well I'm sure your doodles aren't as horrifying then mine XD And yet I put them in my gallery, not my scraps, cause I have nothing else to show XD I was reading on one of your comments you spend like 24 hours on one of these, wow! But honestly, don't be shy to upload even like 5 minute sketches if you have any! I'll check them out just the same and for sure enjoy them ^^
And sorry.. I haven't taken any traditional art courses ever. Is this all done with pencils? Or with some sort of charcoal? Or ink as well for the really dark parts? I've tried to do stuff with lots of shading before, but I can't get it anything that dark with even the darkest pencil I have. Sorry, newbie question, but it's been bothering me for years XD
Sorry for the long ramble!

And btw... I've never been to art school either. All you need to do is be interested in something enough and you can learn a lot of things on your own... then it doesn't hurt to be fairly social and ask questions from the people you think know it better than yourself. :3

Well it is a big money saver not going to school! XD I'd only want to go to art school so I'd have an excuse for quality time on art. But other then that and learning tips and tricks, I don't think it's worth adding to my student loans :\ I've only taken some computer courses, to give me a head start on the digital media and art XD
Hehe, and yes, you are the first person I've asked about this stuff XD I don't really know anyone in rl that likes art like me. And I only started being part of DA and stuff like a year ago. So time to be social and absorb art and knowledge! I thank you a million again! And I hope you don't mind my lengthy responses XD

Oh man... you guys are going to get me to geek over lemurs... huh? But, they are extremely fascinating animals... not only visually, but in personality... that's a pretty rare thing to see in the animal kingdom.
Thanks for the vote of confidence... I'll start posting my little doodles more... if not for the sake of my friends. :>
Yeah... everything I do is with mechanical pencils. It's easy to mistake the two though, and trust me... but the most you look at and study art, the more you can pick up on the small and unique details between the mediums. Lead tends to be much shiner than charcoal, while charcoal has a very matted look to it.
As for getting things to look this dark, I have pencils with different types of leads. Pencil lead types vary from 9H to 9B... and the standard pencil lead is HB (which you probably have) which is right in-between. Basically. 9B lead is very soft, so it lays down a ton of lead in a single stroke, and gives it a dark and rich color, while 9H lead is very firm and hard, so very little of the lead comes off in a single stroke and thus produces a lighter shade. The rest of it just has to do with applying the right amount of pressure. :> For this drawing I used lead types H4, H2, HB, and B2 lead.
Another thing I noticed is that shades become much more vibrant (the darks become more noticeable) when I apply a spray fixative to the drawing after I'm done with it. I don't know exactly why this happens, but for some reason the drawing really pops out when I do that.

Muhaha! We'll suck you into our geaky obsession over lemurs! XD Yes, extremely fascinating animals ^^ My local zoo only has ringtails, but it's so fun to just go and watch them for hours ^^ I should just take a sketchbook next time and spend the whole day studying them
Yes, I look forward to it! And your generous responses and beautiful art seem to raise my own confidence over art too somehow XD I hope to find the time to sit down for many many hours without interruption to spend time on a single piece ^^
And wow, that's just crammed with REALLY helpful tips for me. I use a mechanical pencil for my scibbles, but for some reason I never thought about getting darker leads for it XD I only used my pencil set I have for attempting shading stuff, but even the 9B didn't go much darker then my HB (I thought it was a decent quality set, but I guess not XD ) I've really grown attached to my mechanical pencils anyway, so I'll have to get some more types of lead next time I have a chance to go out ^^ And I'll have to take a look into that spray too! I only thought they used finishing sprays for paintings XD I've spend all my free time on researching and learning software for CG art, I really should spend more time looking into traditional stuff, considering I do appreciate it more X3
I thank you so much! All that info is a really big help! I really appreciate you responding to my question like that ^^

Really... just jot down ideas... and then pick one you like and just have big plans for it... One thing I like to do, if just start drawing my very best on a certain area even before I start the rest of the line art or any of that stuff... that way it's motivation for the rest of the drawing to look that good.

Lupinator In reply to JWiesner [2008-09-21 13:32:47 +0000 UTC]
Nooo... It would be nothing of the sort! A refined cartoony style is more difficult to master in my opinion, it's easy to work detailed and realistically -- it's simply imitating the things you see around you. To have an original and cartoony style is rather genius to me... it's taking the details and modifying them into fundamentals, which leave more room for you to exude personality. It's very inspiring to me, and not something I can really do, so I envy those who can.
As it was put to me once, "Details are just meaningless information." That's why I can't understand when people get so obsessed over them. Having 30 strands of hair on the head instead of three perfectly placed lines doesn't tell me any more or less about the artwork, it's a waste of time really. :\

Sorry, I don't have any more lemurs... BUT there shall be more!
Really, I'm a crappy artist... I don't draw nearly as much as I should... so I have my ideas floating around, but I don't usually have a lot of motivation to pick up a pencil... :\ But yanno, it's really just a major matter of a time issue... Drawings like these are nice, but extremely time consuming... I really need to figure out a simpler style and, when that happens, I'm sure the art will flow out more consistently. :>
Now... I'm going to call upon your lemur nerd prowess here. Twice I've seen you say male wrist gland... which implies that it's... only a male attribute? Because, this image lent a bit of confusion on that matter. This is a female, and it looks to have the same glands on its wrists [link] From the wiki article... is says something about this. "Both genders have... ...antebrachial glands located on the inner surface of the forearm in proximity of the wrist. However, only the male has a horny spur that overlays this scent gland." What exactly is this horny spur?? Can i has a ejimacation plz? :3

Zahzumafoo In reply to Lupinator [2008-09-21 19:21:56 +0000 UTC]
Ah, it's alright! Whenever you draw one again, I'll be happy to see it!
NO YOU AREN'T. Just because you don't draw very much doesn't mean you're a crappy artist! Look at me- I've been sketching at least once a day for over 3 years, and my art still sucks. XD
I can see what you mean about the time issue, though. I can't even imagine how long this must've taken! Even my most detailed pics don't even compare to this, and they take me several hours!
Anyhow, good luck finding a simpler style. I know I have a more 'serious' style for when I want something to look good, and then a really loose style for when I just want to sketch something without putting much effort into it. (:
You're correct! I think I confused the brachial with antebrachial glands. x) Although, while they both have these glands, I've noticed with the lemurs I've handled that the females' are much less visible. Something else I've noticed, although it's probably a subject for further study, is that the females' antebrachial glands are less visible during certain parts of the year. When their hormones are in a fairly normal state (When it isn't breeding season and when they don't have an infant) the glands aren't as prominent. It might just be that the females I had been looking at were just ones I hadn't paid as much attention to before- With all the lemurs running around and when I only see them on an infrequent basis, it can be hard to judge that very accurately. x) Anyhow, yes, they both have a wrist gland. The males is much larger and more visible, though, and it had the spur. I actually haven't had the opportunity to study a spur, as all the gentle males I've handled were neutered (Something I strongly disagree with). I've caught slight glimpses of it on our more shy breeding males, and it seems to be just a little pointed black lump. I think it's a small projecting bone, because when they mark on trees it leaves gouges in the bark. BUT, honestly, I don't have a good idea of what exactly it looks like. I'll probably be working with some Ring-Tails again sometime in the next week or so, though, so I'll be sure to look closely at all their wrists and hopefully get a glimpse of a spur. C:

Yes well, he is a main character of mine (and I don't have many), so I can only imagine you'll see more of him. :> Plus, other's seems to like him too, so that's some motivation.
*cough*bullshit*ahem* I mean, on the contrary, I do believe you have some very admirable works, and I really enjoy your style. You got a lot of energy and personality in your work, and I honestly think a very original look, I could spot your stuff out of a crowd anyday, and that's just awesome.
As for the hours I put into this drawing... I'd roughly peg it around 24-30 hours. Which is pretty standard for character portraits like this. What's sad is that I could have spent twice as long on it still, adding minor stupid details and making it utterly flawlessly smooth like what you'd see in digital artwork. Even still, works like this usually requires some epic motivation for me to want to make art like this... and motivation is hard to come by these days. I'd do stupid little drawings more, but I almost feel obligated to draw to this extent since I know most of the people watching me are looking for this quality of artwork. ;_;
But, man... I need to relax a bit... uhg. I'd have to say that the bottom drawing here is probably my standard super simple style, while this is something you'd see right in-between my super artwork and what I just showed you. I'm hoping to find an area in between those two drawings to draw in.
Please, let me know what you find out, and don't be afraid to blabber on and on... trust me my knowledge isn't as robust as you might imagine! But I must say, I love the fact that you get to handle these guys! It's enough to get anyone passionate about an animal! I'm curious about your line of work really. Are you an assistant Zoo Keeper or something of the sort? You certainly have a rare opportunity to say the least. :>
Hahaha... I had a rare opportunity to have some hands on work with cheetahs down in Namibia, Africa... and it was an absolutely fantastic experience, best one of my life... but it's just awesome that you are able to do these things much closer to home. :> And hey, if you ever want to know a thing or two about cheetahs *pulls on suspenders* This guy might know a thing or two for you learn. :3

Ahh, well that's great! (: I'll look forward to seeing any other pics you might upload- In super-detailed-style or otherwise!
HERESY, HERESY! >O
Awwwwwwwww, you mean it? I didn't think my style was recognizable! Unless you were able to recognize it by it's failure or something. :I Well thank you, I appreciate it! I still don't think my art is anything special, but hey, at least people like my style!
EUGH- GOOD LORD. If I spent that long on a pic, my head would explode.
A trait I suppose isn't very desirable, I suppose... I really should learn how to put more time into my art. I just never have the motivation. Eh. Something I need to work on, I suppose. But, I digress!
Those pics are both great, though! I'm sure if you could find an in-between style that you enjoy doing, or that is easy for you, it'd be awesome. (:
Alright, I'll be sure to let you know what I find out! My exact 'job' varies. In the past I've volunteered at 2 fairly shabby establishments. While the facilities weren't great, I still learned a lot about the animals (Such as hot to tell a happy animal apart from an unhappy one... xD). While I was there I suppose you could consider me a 'Junior' Zoo keeper. I was younger and not paid for the job, but I did everything the other keepers did and I didn't have to shadow people or anything. I also directed a lot of the tours- Out of all the people there, even the zoo owner and manager, I was the first person they'd ask a lemur question. As well, I was the first person they'd go to when they wanted someone to bring out a lemur to teach guests about it. I'm by no means an expert, but I knew more than those guys did! Anyhow, while I was there I did a lot of handling the lemurs (usually by a leash. Not very professional, in my opinion, but that was the job) while guests were able to interact with them. I also fed them and cleaned the enclosures when I was there. (:
Currently, though. I volunteer at one much nicer facility, but it has a lot less animal-interaction. I'm usually stuck raking the leaves in the White Tiger's cage (or the same with Snow Leopards, but I like that one more because the Snow Leopards are pretty) or cleaning up after Rhinos... But I do get to feed the lemurs on occasion. I haven't been out there in a few months because I've been busy and out-of-state, but since I've been gone they've opened to the public, so hopefully when I get back I'll get to do more with the animals and hopefully get back into giving tours!
I also work (work, not volunteer. But it's not on a regular basis) at a smaller, private facility, but we don't have any lemurs. There are bushbabies, though- The closest cousins to lemurs! We just don't have any bigger animals. This place is a lot more specialized and are focusing just on prosimians.
RAMBLE RAMBLE! I didn't intend to type so much! Always getting carried away. xD
Ohhh, cheetahs! How awesome! Those are one of my favorite big cats, along with Snow Leopards. Such amazing animals, that really must've been an incredible experience! There actually aren't any facilities nearby that have cheetahs (YET! The place where I volunteer might get some, soon), but hopefully I can see one in real life soon!
And I'm sure if I even want to know something about Cheetahs, you're the first person I'll go to! :D

I know the feeling. It can be very frustrating when you get half way through a pic, and you end up screwing up the eye or like you did, find some unknown shitty substance on it. One time, I smeared a BIG FAT BLOODY MOSQUITO across a drawing-I was so angry! Ended up photshoping out the goop-and it turned out fine.

Sure, sure... except at the point I messed up I merely had the lantern left to draw... :C I was very close to completion, so demoralization set in pretty deeply.
As for the photoshop, that was an option, but I really like for my artwork to be presented as it appears in reality... for some reason this is very important to me. I'd probably have stuck with the crappy looking smudges over the photoshop (maybe.... this case was pretty extreme and completely jeopardized the integrity of the image)... but, I dunno why I'm like that. :\
