Description
I drew this in.... maybe 2 days? It was a last minute piece that I really wanted to get done for my final presentation. My professor ended up liking it a lot and mentioned something about it being "abstract" (....like between the shape of the wing and egg...) and saying it was an improvement and such. This is where I admit that I am not much of an art student, and therefore need to do a bit of research into this "abstract" thing. We started talking about Georgia O'Keeffe, so I've got a vague idea to work with.Anyhow.... Um. Draconis cristatus hatching... Yep. The leaves there serve as compost to keep the eggs warm during the incubation period.
Vine and compressed charcoal, 12"x14"

I confess I don't know much about your dragons, but the egg shell looks rather soft for hatching time. But the effect it gives is quite nice. I'm also wondering how all that dragon fits in an egg that size? Though there's probably enought space underneath with the shell having flopped onto its back. Well, into my collection it goes.

It's a tight fit in that egg. Proportions might be a little off, as it really was a rush job.
The eggshell is leathery rather than hard. I looked at some pictures of snakes and turtles hatching for references. Granted, I won't defend it too hard because I didn't have much time.

Ooh! Ooh! Another question! About the compost... is the sex of the hatchlings temperature dependant like in crocodiles?

Originally it was, but then I decided that it wouldn't be because the compost doesn't play a huge factor in the incubation process (it's just too shallow). So in the end, the compost is just there to add some extra warmth just to make sure that the eggs don't get too cold.

Thanks. ^.-.^
(I got your note about your contest, and I would like to enter, but I'm not positive I have the time, though I think I do. So I guess that's a "yes".)

Aww, cute!
It doesn't look very abstract to me, but then...I've never been much for abstraction.
