Description Minor Edit: I would like to have to thank each and every one of you for each and every on these cakes. But I do not have the time - I've just started university, and I'm fortunate enough for these to have become extremely popular. I cannot spend all my time clearing out the favourites! So please, accept my heartfelt thanks NOW. They wouldn't be doing so well without you. I wouldn't have the DD without you. So thank you.

Now back to my main comments.

EDIT 6: (I really need to re-do this, don't I?) The video tutorial is finally done, three years late. But done!

EDIT 3: Given that the main query I get concerns the icing, and that it's a question I can't help much with, I'm very glad that somebody has found a good tutorial on how to make chocolate-fudge icing! SironaSelkie found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvl7iE… and seems fairly happy with the results. I hope that's helpful.

EDIT 2: Oh my gosh, thank you for the Daily Deviation! I just saw that I had a comment- and fav-spam in my box, started to get suspicious, and went to check the DD list - and there it was! I'm really honoured, and I hope that it's useful to lots of you out there. Many thanks to Nyiana-sama for the suggestion and FantasyStock for the actual DD.

I'm afraid that there is no way I can cope with thanking you all individually for favourites on it right now. But please know that I really appreciate every single one, that I hope you have a use for it, and that I would love to know if you do use it.

My cakes:

I would LOVE to see any cakes decorated using this technique! If anyone follows the tutorial and you take a photo, if you post a comment here or on the cake, I'll link all of them at the bottom of these comments. Looking forward to seeing them guys!

Whew! That took a long time.

This is the tutorial I made to accompany my birthday cake lutra-gem.deviantart.com/art/C… which so many people liked. I really do love all you guys, and you make me feel a better artist. Anyway, VERY large file I must point out, I'm going to try and make it so you click the download button to the left of your screen to see it.

EDIT: I would like to say thank you hAtObAaKaQuAy for correcting me; the characters on the side are actually katakana, not kanji.

I apologise if anyone thinks that this is in the wrong category, but the only food and drink related tutorial category was in the Non-art gallery, and that pissed me off, as this is art. So I stick it in paintings since it's just painting with a different medium.

I hope that this tutorial is of some use to you, and I apologise for any mistakes I have made in the writing of this; I'm afraid that if I make a mistake I have to type the whole thing out again once I've left the editor, which sucks.

Did (I quote) "Master chief dukin' it out wif the white ranger from the original power rangers....." This gal's bro ate the cake before she could photograph it. So that sucks. But she says that this tutorial DOES work using frosting/icing. She also says to make sure you have the colours you want for it ready made, especially the black.

Abbreviated Tips from people who have used it:
On the Icing
yumesenpai : Don't use Glace Royal/Royal Icing because you can't put the pin holes in it and it's hard to work with. It might work if you left it a day to set.
On the Colours
icantthinkofaname-09 : Even better than baker's chocolate is Wilton melting chocolates. They're little chocolate discs that you can heat up in the microwave, so you don't need to use boiling water. They taste good and they make a really even consistency. www.deviantart.com/users/outgo… They also make all sorts of bright colored 'chocolates' (these ones taste like vanilla), so you don't even have to stick to chocolatey colors if you don't want to.
Absolutley-Delish : White chocolate with food dye makes better colors is what I've found to work better. It's hard to make it just right. But this does work really well for batter like in white chocolate rainbow brownies or cake.
YellowDaw : I have one more tip: if you don't have the "colored chocolate" you can also add food coloring to white chocolate to make different colors. I think it might depend on the food coloring. I once colored white chocolate with Wilton's color paste and it turned out fine. I think with chocolate you should use either paste or powder colors -liquid colors might make the chocolate grainy because they contain water.
Zanreo : Don't melt more chocolate than you need. You don't actually need that much chocolate(especially if you have a small picture) and it's better to melt more if you need more, than melting more than you need - that's just a waste of good chocolate.

Darkhenge In reply to ??? [2011-06-15 23:00:52 +0000 UTC]

Do you use melted chocolate as a base frosting, or normal buttercream storebought-type frosting? Also, I'm assuming you froze the cake with base frosting first.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lutra-Gem In reply to Darkhenge [2011-06-16 05:37:15 +0000 UTC]

I don't know anything about buttercream or store-bought icing (what we call frosting over here in the UK), and no freezing is involved at any point of the process. My mum makes chocolate fudge icing, which I'm afraid I can't explain to you how to do as I don't know myself. It sets really well and gives a nice firm base that you can still use the pin-pricks on.

I think that melted chocolate would crack when you tried to transfer your design. But any icing that has a firm set should do. In fact, if buttercream is what I'm thinking it is, it would be so squidey that it wouldn't hold a design, let along allow for painting on. If you use regular glacé icing, then I've been told that adding a little butter when you mix up the powder can help, as can putting it in the fridge to help it reset, as it were.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help! As I said, I don't really know about the making of the icing, but as long as it's firm then it should do fine.

Lutra-Gem In reply to RinahMcKaii [2011-05-22 15:23:14 +0000 UTC]

I use chocolate-fudge icing, which my mum makes, so I can't tell you how to make it - sorry! But that or any stiff icing should do the trick.

Lutra-Gem In reply to aanglove [2011-02-21 21:37:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh, are you going to Expo? I've been.. hrm, four times now (I'm in the UK myself), but I'm taking this year out since it's bang in the middle of A2-level exams and I don't want to be fussing about anything other than getting the grades I want. Expo's great, if a bit crowded - have fun! (P.S. Make sure you have a Tube map, there's always something that goes wrong on Expo weekends and it's good to know how you can get to your intended destination should a station be shut/line down; I speak from experience.)

And I'm glad that the tutorial is clear - if you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer them. Let me know if you make a cake, I'd love to see what you do. Thanks for the favourites.

Yeah I think that's what I'm going to! Honestly, I'm an anime noob, and really its my friend who got me into all this and I love it! I'm going to an american school and I'm taking the AP programme, and I know exactly how you feel about exams and everything... I have to balance my school with my anime obsession and it's really hard!! what sucks is that my exams are a week after the con, but whatever, it'll be my first so I'm really excited!! Thank you for the advice!!! I will definitely show you the outcome of the cake!! (It'll be in may, which is far but whatevs) Thanks!!

Lutra-Gem In reply to aanglove [2011-02-22 08:02:40 +0000 UTC]

It sounds likely, as the London MCM Expo is held at the end of May during the half-term break. I made a decision in September that only Vic Mignona or LittleKuriboh would be enough to persuade me to go in May, and Vic's not going and I got to meet LittleKuriboh at a smaller convention a few weeks ago! So now I have no qualms about taking this one out, though I have no idea when I'd be able to go to another one, university and God willing. Maybe by then I'll be able to cosplay.

You're most welcome, and I look forward to seeing what you make.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aanglove In reply to Lutra-Gem [2011-02-22 08:07:29 +0000 UTC]

That's true - Vic won't be there but either way, I need some convention experience! I really want to cosplay, but I can't decide who I want to be! I haven't really seen a lot of animes though, mainly OHSHC, FMA, A:TLA (which I'm not sure counts), Naruto and like one episode of Bleach. I'm trying to watch more but my friend won't let me until I know FMA inside and out!! haha.. well yeah thanks again!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lutra-Gem In reply to aanglove [2011-02-22 08:25:46 +0000 UTC]

You can cosplay as anyone! It doesn't matter if it's anime or not! To give you a selection of people I've seen, just at Expo: Firelord Zuko (A:tLA); Dr Who (at least three different incarnations, not to mention a few monsters); Sora (Kindom Hearts); hundreds of FMA, Naruto and Final Fantasy characters; Star Wars; Lord of the Rings; Scrubs... That's just a mix of what I can think of off the top of my head. Yes, there are more anime characters than other genres, but find a series and a character you love and go for it, be it Western or Eastern.

FMA manga, original anime or Brotherhood? All are good, but I love the manga and Brotherhood best.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aanglove In reply to Lutra-Gem [2011-02-22 09:42:48 +0000 UTC]

I really like the original anime... i haven't read the manga and I started watching brotherhood but Al's new voice upset me!
I guess I have time to make up my mind about the cosplay... I'm really excited for this con!!! It's like all I can think about!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lutra-Gem In reply to aanglove [2011-02-22 10:25:56 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I think the new voice does a good job of it, even if she isn't quite the same. You get used to it.

And yeah, you have plenty of time. It's worth giving it plenty of thought and some effort. Just don't forget entirely about school!
