Description
Minor Edit: I would like to have to thank each and every one of you for each and everyNow back to my main comments.
________________________________________________
EDIT 6: (I really need to re-do this, don't I?) The video tutorial is finally done, three years late. But done!
EDIT 3: Given that the main query I get concerns the icing, and that it's a question I can't help much with, I'm very glad that somebody has found a good tutorial on how to make chocolate-fudge icing! SironaSelkie found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvl7iE… and seems fairly happy with the results. I hope that's helpful.
EDIT 2: Oh my gosh, thank you for the Daily Deviation! I just saw that I had a comment- and fav-spam in my box, started to get suspicious, and went to check the DD list - and there it was! I'm really honoured, and I hope that it's useful to lots of you out there. Many thanks to Nyiana-sama for the suggestion and FantasyStock for the actual DD.
I'm afraid that there is no way I can cope with thanking you all individually for favourites on it right now. But please know that I really appreciate every single one, that I hope you have a use for it, and that I would love to know if you do use it.
My cakes:

I would LOVE to see any cakes decorated using this technique! If anyone follows the tutorial and you take a photo, if you post a comment here or on the cake, I'll link all of them at the bottom of these comments. Looking forward to seeing them guys!
Whew! That took a long time.
This is the tutorial I made to accompany my birthday cake lutra-gem.deviantart.com/art/C… which so many people liked. I really do love all you guys, and you make me feel a better artist.
EDIT: I would like to say thank you hAtObAaKaQuAy for correcting me; the characters on the side are actually katakana, not kanji.
I apologise if anyone thinks that this is in the wrong category, but the only food and drink related tutorial category was in the Non-art gallery, and that pissed me off, as this is art. So I stick it in paintings since it's just painting with a different medium.
I hope that this tutorial is of some use to you, and I apologise for any mistakes I have made in the writing of this; I'm afraid that if I make a mistake I have to type the whole thing out again once I've left the editor, which sucks.

Did (I quote) "Master chief dukin' it out wif the white ranger from the original power rangers....." This gal's bro ate the cake before she could photograph it. So that sucks. But she says that this tutorial DOES work using frosting/icing. She also says to make sure you have the colours you want for it ready made, especially the black.

Yeah, I guess I haven't watched it enough to get used to it, but I'm planning on watching all of it with my friend, and I'm really excited for that! Exactly, I think I have been letting my anime love kind of get in the way of the important stuff, but I'm finally getting myself to be productive again! XD
Just let me know if I'm bugging you by messaging you like this, I'll stop! haha

Madam, if I didn't like talking to people who commented on my art, I wouldn't respond. Of course I don't mind chatting! Most conversations fizzle out quietly after a few days, but I still like to talk for a little while.

Hahaha ok, just making sure! Well I was wondering if you use a tablet for any of your art, because I am thinking about getting one. I haven't looked at all of your art so I could be wrong, but if so, do you have any suggestions?

Lutra-Gem In reply to aanglove [2011-02-22 23:03:44 +0000 UTC]
Ah... Um. Yes, I have a tablet (a fairly old Wacom Bamboo model which is no longer sold), and I've used it a bit... I'm a little bit scared of it, to be honest - it's very strange to get used to! Also, my particular model has a bit of a jitter, which is a pain in the backside. Still, I'm hearing fairly good stuff about the current Bamboo models, and they're a reasonable price for what they do - I don't know if they still come with software packages or not. On of my friends in the US just got one, and she loves it even if she gets the occasional wobble.
From what I've gathered.. Wacom is the best-known brand, though they're by no means the only one. The main lines they do are Bamboo, Graphire, Intuos and Cintiq, going up almost exponentially in price and definitely increasing in quality. They all come in a variety of sizes, and always check for the "Active Area" not just the dimensions, as a tablet of A4-ish size might have an active area of A5 or less. Tablets are expensive little puppies, so definitely do not rush into getting one, and unless you're absolutely certain, don't push far above the £100 mark for your first one (and definitely not above £200!). Better still, see if anyone you know at school/a local college has one and can give you a quick go. If you find that you want to use it a lot, then by all means splash out on a tablet - but unless you're certain, keep your budget low.
I'm probably not the best person to speak to about tablets, as primarily I'm a traditional artist and the research I did for my tablet is probably out of date and hazy by now. (Out of the 105 pieces submitted to my gallery in the past year, only 5 were done on my tablet, and they were all based on sketches I scanned in! I have the intention of making myself learn how to use it properly, but I do not have the time. School sucks.) Maybe have a good look around Amazon to see what brands (and prices) you can get, and I'm sure there must be online articles by people who know what they're talking about comparing various brands and models.
I hope that's of some use!

yeah that does help, thanks!! I was looking at that Wacom brand, and I've been begging my dad for one, so I hope that that works It will definitely be a beginner or medium one, because I'll need to figure ou how it works and get a feel for it. But yeah, thank you very much!

I love seeing what other people have done! And don't worry, it may have a lot of comments on it but I rarely get more than a couple of comments a day from all my pieces put together - it's fairly easy to keep up with that part of my message centre.

hi, congrats on your DD (:
on step 8 did your mum already ice the cake before you added the
chocolate icing of honey?
and if she did, was it cooled before you poked the holes?
hope this wasnt confusing
thanks!

Lutra-Gem In reply to beccyboo-412 [2011-01-24 19:47:35 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
It's not confusing at all! In answer to your question, yes, the cake was already iced before I put the design on it, and it had already set firm so it would take the pin-pricks. I'm afraid I can't tell you how to make the chocolate-fudge icing, but any icing that has a hard set should work fine.

YellowDaw In reply to ??? [2010-12-17 10:56:30 +0000 UTC]
This was quite helpful. I like the idea of chocolate on chocolate (I mean painting with chocolate on chocolate icing) - it's stylish. I have one more tip: if you don't have the "colored chocolate" you can also add food coloring to white chocolate to make different colors.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lutra-Gem In reply to YellowDaw [2010-12-17 14:31:07 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad it's helpful! Although, with regard to adding food-colouring, I'm not sure how well it works - my mum says that it makes the chocolate got grainy, whereas other people have said that it works fine.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
YellowDaw In reply to Lutra-Gem [2010-12-17 16:13:23 +0000 UTC]
I think it might depend on the food coloring. I once colored white chocolate with Wilton's color paste and it turned out fine. I think with chocolate you should use either paste or powder colors -liquid colors might make the chocolate grainy because they contain water.

Lutra-Gem In reply to YellowDaw [2010-12-17 16:16:28 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that makes sense. We only have liquid ones at home.

How'd you get the cake to be so flat?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lutra-Gem In reply to Sifinia [2010-12-15 23:59:22 +0000 UTC]
Um, I don't really know - my mum usually makes the cake and ices it for me. If you just mean the smoothness of the icing, my mum makes chocolate-fudge icing which is very heavy and so long as it's well spread-out, it tends to settle fairly flat. I'm sorry if that's not much help!
