Super Mario RPG honestly featured some of my favourite mario characters. It is such a shame Nintendo doesn't own the rights to them, because I would love to see Mallow, Geno, Smithy etc in more games.

1000% agree! In fact, I've heard lots of people vouch for Geno and Mallow (especially Geno) and I totally agree but I'm glad you also said Smithy. The whole Smithy Gang is such a cool concept (they are literally tools crafted for war trying to take over! and if they don't conform they get melded into that death pit final boss room) and I enjoyed how wildly different they all were. SMRPG is full of so many vibrant characters; it's what making the ending sequence of the game so satisfying to me.
I recently replayed it so I'm still basking in its afterglow. It truly is an amazing game

Completely agree. Such a shame that Square Enix pretty much owns all of the rights to these characters and concepts. I would love to see any of these return in a future mario game. ^^
