Description Heya folks
Finally had time to finish this commission. Quite literally spent ALL FREAKING DAY on it. Gawd my ass hurts. But it needed to be done for tomorrow morning cause my daddy is gonna deliver it for me, and I've had zero time to do it before today, cause of finals.

Is it strange that even though its my first day on holidays, I'm already wanting to go back to school? Like really bad. I love university. I love staying up till 5 in the morning to study for a final, then getting up at 8 to begin the cycle again. I learned that I function best with 3-4.5 hours of sleep. Whoo!

Kay so about the piece. Commission, chalk pastels, velour paper.
JUST SO YA KNOW, doggie on the bottom has only one eye. Hence the missing eye. I had both of my parents going, "uhh Dani...you're missing something.."
[They're always my final voice when I'm doing commissions. I work until they're both pleased with the result. Especially my daddy cause he's not afraid to tell me what's wrong with it.]

Peace out mah homeslices, enjoy the holidays!!

Any feedback would be LOVED.

Thankyou! Once again I left the eyes to dead last, they look like zombie doggies up until the end.

This is fantastic! Those fur textures, the realistic colours and highlights...beautiful!

Also, I think you did very well with the dog with only one eye. I should imagine that've a very difficult thing to paint/draw/colour! o:

Btw! It's not strange to feel like that at all! (At least, I don't think so anyway. ) I think it just shows that you're enjoying yourself - that's NEVER a bad thing! :3

The reference photo I got for the dog with the missing eye hardly showed what the missing eye actually looked like so I practically made the entire thing up. xD
That's the wonderful thing about artistic license.

Thanks!!

I love the dog on the top of the pasge. The colours and structure of the fur looks wonderful (in general btw) and it's expression is really cute. You also got quite the skills black fur, it looks wonderful.
How do you do the background, up front or afterwards?

I'm working on a dog commission too atm! But I'm having a really hard time, because the owner gave me photographs that aren't so good. They're blurry or taken from a high angle, so the proportions are weird and I have to correct that. Anyway, I have to finish this thing before tomorrow, because it's a christmas gift, so I guess I have to go back to work now

Nice hearing from you again

Oh I know what you mean exactly with the crappy references. Take a look at the photos I had to work with for this piece: [link]
Getting insufficient reference photos definitely makes you learn as an artist. You learn how to..I don't know, make things up, I guess. Make things up and still manage to make it look like they belong. When I look for a reference, I look specifically for the right angle that I want. Everything else is a lot easier to make up. Details are very easy just as long as you have some idea of how light works and how the fur flows.
I can't wait to see this piece from you!

The background was difficult. As I explained to *Supaslim , I had to try really hard to balance the colours of the piece as a whole with the background because the one light dog is on the top, and two blacks on the bottom. But generally I tend to work down, so I start at the top then work downwards. Its especially handy with pastel cause you smudge things bad when you work from the bottom up.

LOVE this. The glossy, detailed fur is fabulous, and I adore the blotty background. Subtle and attractive.

The Belgian Malinois (I think) on top reminds me of my dog, Jake- looks just like him, except his left ear was floppy! I miss him.

I was totally lost when I was first thinking about the background. It was especially hard because I didn't properly think out the composition colourwise, the tawny pup should have been in the middle. But I remember thinking about that and then deciding against putting her in the center...do not remember my reasoning though. :/
Overall I'm quite content though.
