I've been requested by a gallery in Ontario to supply them with some of my painted feathers to display, pretty cool 'cause I have no idea how they found me. C:So these are them. I spent most of Friday evening and Saturday watching Game of Thrones and painting these. Normally I only get to paint a certain range of subjects on feathers (I sell them quite regularly and I have to cater to a certain locale if I want them to sell). So some new animals were a fun test.

If you don't mind my asking, how do you get the feathers to stick together? And also, how do you avoid parts of the feather separating and creating annoying gaps in your image?

I always spray the feathers with an aerosol fixative, it helps prep the surface for paint as well as stiffens the barbs. But sometimes you accidentally use too much pressure and the brush pierces through the feather. That always sucks. Sometimes it happens in really unfortunate places too, like right in the middle of the animal's face.

Haha! Too true! That's what happened to me when I first tried to paint on feathers, and it just became really frustrating for me. I think at one point I tried to spray it with a fixative for charcoal, but my heart wasn't really in it anymore, and I was beginning to run out of feathers.

I glued the feathers together using a sort of aerosol glue, super messy stuff. And then I always give the feathers a few good coats of an aerosol fixative, it preps the surface for paint and it stiffens it up (you can even use hairspray in a pinch).
