Description
...help me.Edit: Sigh. Yes, I've read the Guardians of Ga'hoole series. No, I don't like them. They aren't well written, they have glaring inaccuracies about avian biology, and they're targeted for people about fifteen years younger than I am. I am sorry! These owls have nothing to do with those ones.
Sorry, guys. Just not my thing.

I think I'd buy all these owls if I saw them! They're really great, and really cute. I love the serious, curious, and silly faces. Especially the occasional, 'wise-owl-huge-eyebrows' ones. The big feet are really adorable to me, and I love the owlet with large eyes.

May I ask, what type of owl is the small one with the big yellow eyes, towards the upper left corner?

It's a hatchling. Noctua youngsters don't look like real owl babies.

I have to say, I sympathize with you on part of the whole owls=Ga'Hoole related thing. Not too long ago, I had been by a nutty fan of the series that one of my own owl characters reminded them of GoG (said owl had nothing to do with Ga'Hoole, and differed greatly from normal Earth owls anyway). Needless to say, I wasn't exactly happy about that, and I have a bad feeling that most people's owl characters will get these same accusations nowadays, especially if they were done up in armour or such things. It's kinda sad.
That said, though, I adore the style you've drawn your owls in. They're wonderfully expressive, and look oh-so-huggable. c:

Oh god! Is that a magpie? (fourth from above) I love it.
I really love your art. I have seen the movie's trailer, and probabily owls aren't made for fly that much? Their wings can't afford sea and long distances!

oh i wasn't contradicting you, you obvious now far more than me.
i was just asking, rather badly, how can someone mess up owl biology,
or more specifically, what did the messed up?

lyosha In reply to Mairelyn [2010-12-17 12:53:07 +0000 UTC]
How they fly, how they hunt, how wind and water and fire affect feathers, how fledglings develop, etc. etc. Which is fine in a fantasy book... except that they're using scientific names and other correct details, so how are kids to tell the two apart?
It results in a book series that is misleading kids about owls and owl behaviour, which is somewhat depressing when you have an owl in front of a group of kids and all of them are spouting garbage from the books. :/

I think they did a lot of that so they could personify them further, and instead of being exactly as a assumed owl be like, have them have that human-like appearance

Fledglings are young birds, pellets can also be called 'castings'.

oh and about the description- i personally love the GOG books though i only just started reading them, but even so it saddens me that all owls will be labled under that franchise because of the film.
i didnt think of the guardians when i saw this infact i though more of the secret of nymph for some reason XD
Anyway on with the picture :3 i love your style its so wonderful your anatomy is brilliant i love the owl with the gold accents and the one with the blue green tipped feather
