This was very simple to understand and straight forward, so well done and thank you!
But i'm having trouble trying to figure out how to "install" (for want of a better word) brushes i have downloaded from files/packs/downloads here on dA. I can't figure out how to make the background transparent without ruining the image i'm trying to make into a brush. Do you have any help/advice on this?

I don't really understand your question.
Brushes you download for PS/GIMP should already be converted into brush file format, and should be transparent in the first place?
Unless you're talking about making your own brushes?

Oh, it's ok now, i figured it out. i was using the jpeg preview of the bush as the brush, not the gbr file. Silly silly me . Thanks anyways!

haha I just did a basic foreground to background gradient, and then on a new layer I laid down a scanline pattern I made, then merged the two layers
