Description Speed paint for

80 mins to paint, but faffed around with colour balance for a good 10 minutes. So really 90.

Really ripped into the custom brushes this time. Who wants to paint every single leaf? Not I!

Dang it keep forgetting to put a next topic: Giant Arthropod of Titan

Thank you! I used Gimp which is an open source photoshop equivalent. I started with some basic gradients for the background. Then using the lasso tool I outlined the main shapes (boat hull, masts, statue, trees etc) and filled those in with gradients as well. The nice thing about doing this is you can really play with depth of the objects easily. You just pick your gradient colour from where you want your object to be against the background as a start. Modify your colour slightly by making it a bit darker (to bring it forward) or a bit lighter(to push it back). Then apply it to the selection. Instant atmosphere.
I then detailed the hull and statue with a standard round brush and used a couple of custom brushes for the bushes and the grass. Finished it with some lighting adjustments using an overlay layer. Done.

I got the technique from a really old tutorial of Craig Mullins. I don't bother using separate channels like he did. Check it out!

I got so annoyed with windows, I got rid of it so I now run a linux only system, but it doesn't run Photoshop without some workarounds. So I just stuck with Gimp.
Gimp is just a tool. Any tool can provide good results if you learn how to work with it. The techniques you can use are pretty much the same in both. I think it has improved a lot in the last few releases for example now there is a single window mode like in Photoshop. The multiple windows GUI was really annoying!
The tool isn't important really, it's building up your skill and experience in general that matters, and yep it takes time!

i have linux as well, but i only used mypaint for it, and somtimes gimp for adding special effects (for example this one: [link] ) (only the background)

i think youre right, but for really high quality work is photoshop the better tool, i think
