Description Just in time for the Headmasters DVD release. Recoloring the lineart to the covers of the original Marvel Comics Headmasters miniseries, issue #4.

Here's the thing. When I was younger, the Headmasters never made a lot of sense to me. (Still don't sorta.) I mean, like... Who's in charge of the body? I mean, is it Arcana or Brainstorm? What if the Nebulan dies of old age? Can you remove the Nebulan and get your old head back? We since have had some answers to these questions. but when I was 12, it still made no sense to me. (It would seem that the Japanese series just omited the whole Nebulan angle and said they were downsized robots from planet Master. Which knowing what was to come with the Transtectors, Micromasters, and even eventually the Maximals... It actualy makes more sense.)

But Targetmasters... That made PERFECT sense to me. Pinpointer is a perfect partnership for Crosshairs, who both are expert snipers. Misfire couldn't aim worth a crap, so Aimless was supposed to aim for him. (That backfired!) So yeah, I always liked Targetmasters. As a kid, I only had one Headmaster. (Snapdragon with Krunk) But I had SEVERAL Targetmasters. (Hot Rod w/ Firebolt, Quickmix w/ Boomer & Ricochet, Spinister w/ Hairsplitter & Singe and Misfire w/ Aimless. Not to mention four out of the six Seacons, and a coupel of the Action Master Targetmasters.)

Annnyways...

For comparison to the original cover, that can be seen here: [link]

I did much prefer the Japanese version of the Headmasters, and was kind of baffled as to why they never did introduce the Targetmasters. And I also found the Japanese version of the Pretenders to be better than the comic version.

The colouring in is wonderful! The texture really shows well in detail. The art is fantastic also I like what's happening and the compositions. Good work to all people who made this!

Agreed! Targetmasters made way more sense then the Headmasters. My parents thought it was kind of morbid to rip their heads off like that.

No offence to the original colorist, but yours looks much better. I like how you went with original comic colors (for Kup at least) but regular G1 too. Nice work!

Well, I don't hold it too badly against the colorist. I mean, coloring Transformers is a bit different than coloring people. They're all metallic and usually have a multitude of different color schemes on there, that almost always that needs to be slavishly adhered to... Added onto the fact that the old school coloring was done by hand (with watercolors and markers) on a tight turnaround time (sometimes less than a day or two) and usually with no current references handy... I'm amazed they turned out as well as they did!

Yeah, it really was just the coloring style of the times. Still, your recolor is proof that modern comicbook coloring techniques can really make vintage lineart shine. It was really just the difference in technology that limited the colorists in those days; though I have seen some awesome recent pages colored in just watercolor, but like you said, it was a time crunch thing too.
