Description If you've enjoyed this tutorial, feel free to visit my portfolio ([link] ) for more tutorials, resources and some pretty wallpaper-packs.

What you'll learn:
- Creating A Bubble Brush
- Creating / Employing Actions
- Illustrating 3D-Typography Using Only Photoshop
- Illustrating Vector Swirls
- Additional Visual Effects

I will most likely not be the first person to tell you that three-dimensional typography is experiencing an ever increasing popularity amongst both designers and their audience. An understandable development as the third dimension introduces new elements and uncharted playgrounds into the wonderful world of typography, combining the aspects of design and communication in an unparalleled fashion. While most other articles on 3D-typography employ external 3D-rendering applications, this introduction will guide you through the complete process of recreating the tutorial’s cover illustration using Adobe Photoshop and it’s built-in tools only. The tutorial comes with the illustration’s original, layered .PSD-file, a set of 8 3D-Actions and the original bubble- and smudge-brushes.

Like? I love them, you've become my inspiration since its so difficult to find such a good artist in graphics and customization, which is what i'm interested in.

I'll get into a few tutorials of yours and show you what i could do. I just got myself CInema4d, gonna start off.

Well, to me, creative commons means that the tutorial and it's content becomes the property of the world and people who live in it - I just reserve all commercial rights.

Do you mean there are already translated versions out there? Could you send me the links / sources? I'd love to link to them from my tutorial site (a lot of people ask me for localized versions)

The tutorial is licensed under the stated creative commons-license - this basically means that you can do everything with and to it as long as you don't profit from it commercially and credit me / link back to my site ( [link] ) . So, please feel free to translate the tutorial and post it on your forum (if you want to, let me know when you release it, I'd love to see the translated version).

I'm glad I could do my part in inspiring you and sharing some of my knowledge. As I've learned a lot from reading tutorials and articles by fellow designers, I just feel it's my duty to give something back

MadPotato In reply to Are-Why-Eh-En [2009-05-04 09:33:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you find these tutorials useful and hope they inspire you to create new & beautiful things.

To this date no "real magazine" has featured any of my tutorials so printing the PDFs is as close as you're going to get to the "magazine experience". I did however already think about selling a professionally designed/printed collection of tutorials once I have had the time to create enough tutorials and ressources.

This was really helpful! Unfortunately, I don't have a version of Photoshop that allows actions. How else can I create 3d text?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadPotato In reply to unconscious54 [2009-02-08 13:51:02 +0000 UTC]

You don't necessarily need to use actions to create 3D-text using this technique - the concept of actions is simply introduced to save time and abstract the repetitive process of moving each duplicated layer 1px to wherever you want the extrusion to take place.

Check the section "SETTING UP 3D-EXTRUSION-ACTIONS" and manually repeat the steps that are explained after the record action-button has been pressed. (bring time and patience )

One more thing - sorry to bug you!

I'm having a difficult time adding a gradient to the text. Do you by any chance know how I could do that with Adobe 5.0? (I clearly need to upgrade..)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadPotato In reply to unconscious54 [2009-02-09 16:50:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, as a CS3-user (that's version 13.0 if I'm not mistaken), Adobe 5.0 seems pretty far away and I have no idea what the forefather of my beloved software is or isn't able to do...

If 5.0 does not support "Blending Options..."/"Layer Styles" there might yet be another way of adding a gradient to the text: CTRL-click your text-layer to create a selection-outline of your text-element, switch to the gradient-tool (that's the G-button - well, possibly at least ) and draw a gradient that is to your liking... Hope that helps

Text is not only where is stops you can give a whole new feel to every day objects. this is SO pricesless as a tutorial. honestly this combined with 's tutorial:
[link]

really helps. I never used the burn and dodge tool before now, and I feel like an idiot for not doing it now.

Hey mate,

it's always a great pleasure to see people that are left inspired and motivated by my tutorials ! Most people tend to follow the steps in the tutorial and pretty much come up with what I came up with - but I take from your words that you'll walk new paths with this - and that's the only right way

All the best and -if you care- let me know what great things you came up with...

very professional dude

do you speak german
(because of your name when i hovered the pdf...)

can you give me the name of this magazine and maybe an url

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadPotato In reply to eos8 [2008-06-02 21:47:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm actually German. I hope that's not apparent from my tutorials though

Which magazine are you speaking of? The overall style of the tutorial was heavily influenced by Computer Arts ( [link] ) which I highly recommend if you are interested in inspiration, technique and insight into the creative industry.

Everything else is my very own attempt at creating valuable resources in an inspirational and informal style.

eos8 In reply to MadPotato [2008-06-03 06:31:14 +0000 UTC]

kewl, I´m german, too

so, let´s speak deutsch

kann man dieses magazin auch in deutschland kaufen

auf jedenfall hast du da hammer tutorials am start, werd mir die nach und nach mal auf die platte ziehen und kucken was ich daraus lernen kann! sicher ne menge

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadPotato In reply to eos8 [2008-06-03 11:24:51 +0000 UTC]

eos8 In reply to MadPotato [2008-06-03 14:31:45 +0000 UTC]
