Edit/ I am very new to tutorials but I'd love to know what you want to see in part two!! I'm current ally planning it so please comment what!!a short reference guide on what to think about when starting out on refs

actually, I did it in photoshop! Sorry!
If it helps, I used the marquee tool (which has a rounded rectangle option)

Oh yea!
First duplicate the layer
then go to filter>blur>guassian blur (spellinggg hurrr)
then change the layer mode to overlay and change opacity to your liking!
(I also like to experiment here! Soft light gives a very similar, more subtle effect)

How do you do you're outlines? I would like to see that tutorial. By outlines, I mean how do you change the color to make it match or accent the colors of your characters?

maybe for part 2 you can add like, how do you choose the layout of all of the things? in this you mention all of the things it needs but not exactly how you lay it out to make it look nice and not cluttered ;w;

maybe some more help on the actual reference in part 2? like thins part was more like layout, so maybe part 2 could be different poses you could put your character in, ways to make sure they show the whole pattern. so, overall more based on the details and such
