If I were ever to make a Pokemon fangame I'd style my fanregion like this. Obviously the towns and routes are the major missing elements, but I've planned them out. Just working on their look. Not sure how much more detailed I would make the map itself either. I do like a clean and simple look and I'm pretty happy with the general feel of this.

For those interested, this is based on California, specifically Northern California (a.k.a Alta California, hence the name). Some of the real-world places I've pulled from are:

Lake Tahoe (upper right)

Lake Mono (middle-right, with island in center)

Death Valley (right)

Yosemite Valley (right, forest ringed by mountains) including Half Dome (just above the forest)

Oroville Dam (center-top)

Mount Diablo (center volcano)

Clear Lake (upper left)

Alcatraz (middle-left island in bay)

Farallon Island(s) (in ocean at left)

I left space left for the towns in places where real cities and towns are, like San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, etc. as well as places that would make for interesting locations like Point Reyes, Sutter's Mill, Lick Observatory, and others.

Nice little detail with Mt. Diablo, I see it’s a bit more than lava vents here!

Ooohh.. sweet! This map is very colorful with colors much like those used in games like PokΓ©mon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, and it looks like the same style as those uncolored maps of old fantasy books, incredible!Β Keep it up, the map is very well done! ^^

Thanks. I spend a lot of time on colors usually.

Being from California myself, this map is really great! A lot of fan regions based off california always make their maps too identical to an actual map without adding any flare which makes a lot of them very boring and same-y. I like maps like these where they take liberties; you're making a fantasy world, not a 1 to 1 copy.

I think knowing an area really helps you come up with ideas and know where you can embellish parts or merge others together. There's a lot of empty space in real maps and it's good to know where they are so you can shrink them.

This looks amazing! Would you mind if I used this technique to create my map in a similar style? Primarily the way you created the water and mountains? Not going to directly copy anything, of course, but I really like the style of it. If not, I understand!

Could I even object? I mean, it's not like I came up with the idea of drawing mountains like this. Pick up any random fantasy book and there's probably something like it in the first few pages. But thanks for the compliment anyway. I'll take it as appreciation for the execution if not the original concept.

It's more the color scheme than the style. I have scene this map type before but I wanted to be sure I didn't cause offense by imitating this style. Thanks.
