Story:

Missy (the Barn name of Artemis) was shaking her head and snorting as she trotted on in the warm-up arena. She was frisky, prancing along the fence as Hannah tried to keep her attention. The rider knew her little horse would calm down once she started jumping, it was just getting her there with a calm and steady attitude would be something entirely different.

“Whoa there” Hannah murmured under her breath. They circled in a quieter corner, the mare stroppily bouncing whenever given too much space to misbehave. It was not an easy start, but after trotting for a good while, the mare finally stopped clamping her teeth together and started to relax. Hannah breathed a sigh of relief, patting Missy’s neck and sitting deep to canter. The mare sprang into action, again throwing her legs a little for the first few strides but settling much faster than before. They went large, careful not to bother anyone else’s warm up, before trying one of the little jumps in the middle. Missy approached it hot, Hannah having to close her seat and try her best to keep the mare steady. It was a bit of an awkward stride and Missy bounced and shook her head on landing, but some of her energy was finally being directed into something more constructive.

Hannah rode her around again, praising the mare and straightening her up to take the other obstacle. They flew over the little vertical, much more comfortable this time as Missy got her head in the game. Hannah grinned, patting the mare’s neck as her confidence started to grow. She trusted her little horse to take her over this course, no matter how new it was to the mare.
Now all they had to do was wait for their bell to be rung, so they could show what they were capable of.
