Description
Shepard has lost everything, his family on Mindoir, his squad on Akuze, Anderson, the Normandy with so many good friends on-board like Joker, Tali and Vega. However what has hit him the hardest is loosing Liara. For 9 months now he has had to deal with the fact that the woman that meant so much to him, the woman that gave him strength and the woman that had always been there for him was lost because of a mistake he made. Facing depression and loss, Shepard is no longer the man he once was, gone is the indestructible leader the saviour of the Citadel. Today John Shepard is a pit of remorse, a man that only knows pain and depression. He has lost the will to go on, with the loss of Liara he has lost hope.Everything takes an unexpected turn when his mission to go back in time and stop the Reapers, stop the fall of Earth and stop the loss of Liara goes wrong and he and the Normandy SR-3 find themselves in an alternative timeline, where among other things he died years ago on Mindoir and his sister Jane survived instead. The hardest part for John however isn't the fact he has to live with the loss that he failed his reality, trillions of people dead including his Liara, but that Jane, his devious younger sister has encouraged the Liara from her reality to help her brother heal. Unsure of his feelings and who they are directed at, and still haunted by nightmare's John is confused, feeling unfaithful to his Liara and is slowly loosing himself and his grasp on reality.
Will Liara, a woman who had never had the benefits of John's impact on her life be able to help him? And what if she can't? What will happen to John Shepard and the fate of another galaxy facing total destruction at the hands of the Reapers?
---
Another teaser from my fan fiction Parallels. My aim for this render was improved lighting and trying to get it to blend better into the background. I also tried to have a sad, confused but understanding look on Liara's face and a depressed look on John's. Liara in this story still has a lot of her innocence from Mass Effect 1, she never had John in her life and so never had to face the pain when he died in 2183 nor the mission to recover his body for Cerberus. She is confused about the situation she finds herself in and a little out of her league.
Let me know if I achieved this. Jane in this story went with Kaiden, the poor guy needs some loving right? Maybe I feel a little guilty that I only once saved him on Virmire. Time to play my dues and give the guy something back. Plus I'm an avid MShep/Liara fan. Liara and Jane are more like sisters than anything else in this story. Jane has always looked out for Liara and has some schemes going that should make for some fun reading.
I am fairly happy with this render. I think it's my best yet. Feedback always welcomed.

Poor guy... I really like this picture, it's got all the emotion that made me love the Mass Effect series.
As for the picture itself: The poses and facial expressions are spot on! And the lighting looks great!

Thank you, I really focused on the expressions in this one. I also tried to give the impression he doesn't want her there but there is nowhere else she wants to be at that moment.

Thank you, I tried to have a really sad scene, I hadn't done one of those before. In Parallels he is a pretty broken man, I haven't posted much about that yet as in the later chapters it really starts to show. In the first 3 chapters he is only holding together trying to be what people expect him to be.
I was hoping that it would have that effect, it had that on me when I was writing the description. In Parallels I wanted to show he is still human and not just a hero. He has emotions. feelings, wants and desires of his own and loosing all that has taken a toll on him. For the better part of the fan fiction he is trying to deal with it all, trying to figure everything out and adjusting to his new circumstances. Liara on the other hand has her own feelings to face, she is really confused about everything as well. I wanted to try something different to what I have seen others write. Not so much the happy ending, at least not at first. There is always one for thing Shepard needs to do, more more battle, one more mission will it ever end?

Yeah I imagine a lot of people would try to do that in his situation try to be what everyone is expecting them to be. But sadly it catches up to the best of us.
Yeah I really like that idea. I was convinced by a friend to write a self insert but I've written it so its different from the rest. Though its hard because there are a lot and I class it more of an OC than writing about myself because I wouldn't know how I'd react in certain situations until I've been in them. If you get what I mean.
But yes its always one more mission lol

That is my vision on Shepard in this story. He has lost so much and it's all finally caught up with him and yet he is still expected to move on, still fight the hopeless battles and still achieve success. Basically he has finally snapped, the elastic bank has snapped. He needs time to heal and pick himself back up, with Liara's help even though she is the last person he wants help from. I want to tell the story of him as a person rather than a hero. There will be hero aspects in there of course, but my main focus is that of a man trying to sort everything out and put all the pieces back together. So many fan fics out there show him or her (depending on the authour's gender of Shepard) as someone who seems able to cope with everything and keep on going. That isn't very realistic in my opinion and I wanted to be different with parallels.
I had once thought of doing an OC/self insert in the Mass Effect universe, but I probably won't do that myself. It just wouldn't feel right for me to do so I will stick with the canon characters. If I do do a OC character it will be an in-universe character, Turian/Asari etc with the intentions of them being put there for a particular purpose.

That is a good idea and thank you! I love Shepard but it annoys that loads of people write them as if nothing effects them. Its why I made a render of one of my Shepard's crying. She had hit her breaking point when Kaidan says his lovely lines in ME2. Not a complete canon shepard mind you as she lives my dream of romancing Joker in game lol. But my idea with her is also that drove her over the edge because she ends up being more renegade than paragon due to everything just letting itself out.
My friend is very persistent. I had wanted to write an OC in that universe and had ideas written down but she finally convinced me to write a OC/self insert. So I'm now mixing in my ideas for the original idea into this fanfic. I've even included some of my OC's that I had written for that story. Also set it two years before the events of ME1 like I had planned with my other fanfic. I want to show the expansion of my character before I even think of going into the timeline of the game.

That's the good thing about art and fan fiction we can do whatever we want. Plus Joker is a character who sticks with Shepard throughout the series, hell Shepard even died for him on the SR-1. So really Joker should had been romance option at least for the Femshep's. While I have nothing against homosexual's I find it a bit weird that when reading online so many people want every NPC/Squad mate to be a romance option for both genders. I disagree with this, I don't mind a few homosexual options for people who wish to play their characters that way, but not every single person on the Normandy is homosexual that is totally unbelievable as not everyone is that way in real life. I mean there is already Cortex, Kaiden (I believe), Traynor and Liara. So there are good options already. I wouldn't be bothered if James and Ashley were that way as well but I think the others should remain as they are. In my opinion of course.
I did the same with my Shepard's, but with Liara. When she didn't want to join him in ME2, more focused on trying to kill the Shadow Broker and to avenge her friend (which Shepard believes there is more there due to how she keeps going on about him), he goes a bit renegade , doing questionable decisions. I even play him that way in the game. He and Zaeed get along great during that time. It isn't until Liara contacts him again *which Shepard ignores several times and eventually TIM orders him to Illium to see her that he straightens himself out after Liara admits a few things. Still he is resistant right up until after the broker is killed. Not exactly canon but it's the way I like to roll John. I plan to write some of that into one of my fan fictions, probably not Parallels but my next one. I want a bit of conflict between the pair.
That would be interesting to read, do you plan to publish it when you're finished?

You're right. I completely agree with that because then that would take away more realism from the game. Not everyone is bisexual/homosexual/straight so its right to have a mixture of those in the game.
Yes Kaidan is an option for Mshep in ME3. In my opinion its also what makes the characters believable. Having some that are straight, some that are bi and then some that are homosexual.
I mean its what bothers me with some Dragon Age fans who think that every character should be like that also. Hell I've seen people bully people because they like one of the straight characters. because they believe, that particular character shouldn't be straight or at the very least be bi. Now honestly I saw why they liked the idea (I love that character and he's finally romanceable in dragon age inquisition) but I didn't like how they went about saying it.
I have nothing against it but it just doesn't seem real because of everyone having different preferences. So why should games take away from that sense of believability.
My OC/self insert my friend convinced me to write I've already started uploading chapters for it the other month. Even made a cover for it that I posted on here. I've been getting favs on fanfiction.net and watches but no reviews so I tend to question myself a little bit.
Especially since before I began writing this fanfic it had been roughly five years since I wrote anything proper on my own. I did write a chapter for a joint fic with a friend but once it was up they didn't want to continue it and the first chapter was heavily edited by them so I didn't like the idea of continuing it myself.
I even decided to have Kasumi enter the fanfic (though only sparingly seen). Completely by accident as when I was writing the chapter she came into I had a plan for that role to be filled by another character. then when I began writing it she just sort of popped into my head.
Mirabili Effectus (fanfic cover) is the cover I did for the fanfic. Sadly sometimes my health problems can get in the way of writing, making models etc so when I do get time I tend to work on models though mainly requests.
Have you posted any chapters for your fanfiction? I'd love to read it and if not when you do upload it send us a link

You can find my fan fiction parallels here: majestic-msfc.deviantart.com/g…
I have posted it here over fanfiction.net for now, as these are more draft versions than final versions. I need to improve upon them and expand them a bit, as well as fix some minor errors on my part. Only two chapters have been posted but I wanted to get a feel what people think. I was planning on posting more but this bug has really hit me hard and knocked me down. I haven't even done any renders of late because of it. So far only 1 person has really given me feedback on the chapters, via note. He was honest and respectful which is what I am after. Can't improve if all I get is "nice work."
I'll be sure to give your fan fiction a read and feedback once I get better. I have it opened in a tab on my browser now. It sounds interesting and a little different from the others I have read out there.
I think the whole LI thing in ME and other games comes down to people wanting everything their way. They can't accept that their favourite NPC can't be romanced by the character gender they choose or preferred to play. I think Bioware has done some pretty revolutionary things in this field, something I have never seen in other games. I often say if they want to romance that character, then swap genders simple as that. You don't want to do that, then you have to settle for the fact that you can't romance said NPC. Bioware shouldn't have to change the way they want their game just because a small minority isn't happy that they didn't get their way or what they wanted.

Nice I will read it as soon as I can and tell you what I think.
I do understand about wanting to post it here first. I was originally going to try on here first but then realised most people going on fanfiction.net to read rather than here. That and finding fanfics on here isn't as easy as on fanfiction.net. But my friend did the same before posting it over there. She got some feedback then posted it there as well as here.
Thank you
You see that is what I do when I like a romance but can't do it. So I play the gender where its possible. I completely agree they shouldn't have to change anything and I certainly hope that they never do as to me its what make their games special. I don't see any other companies having both gender relationships in them that often and if they do not all of them go about them the right way. I've seen a few that have stereotyped it. Bioware doesn't do that.
