Baki: Come on Gaara! I can understand why you didn't want to lay claim to these two, but your own sensei???
Gaara: Well, since Naruto had half the town with him, I thought I'd look pretty silly with just three, so I decided it would be better to go for the tear-jerker effect and be all by myself.
All three together: That's not good enough Gaara!

I think Temari and Kankurou didn't count since they were family. And after Yashamaru's betrayal it had been branded into Gaara's soul that the family members are the first ones to betray you. (not even mentioning Gaara's own father)

He did love his son, it's in the manga somewhere, not sure where though. My friend told me about it but I'm not sure which chapter hehe. I think Yashamaru wanted to die... ugh, can't stand that guy!!! xD Anywho, if you look at it through his prospective he's really not so bad. Gaara was already killing people just for running into him when he was only six years old. His father must have loved him to give him so many chances and he couldn't stand to kill him himself.
His position must have made it terrible.
Elder: "WTF Kish, your kid killed another person!
Kish: "Uh... I'm so sorry! Just wait till he grows up, he'll be able to control the demon then and THEN he'll be able to protect our village 
Elder: "Nope. Can't wait that long. Don't you see??? You made a huge mistake putting that thing inside the kid in the first place. Now look what happened. You're going to have to fix it one way or another!"
Kish: "Er, I guess you're right... I just wanted our village to be more protected. We're being creamed by the Leaf every time we get in a squabble. Could I just test him one last time?"
Elder: "Just make it quick. I'm so sick of this shit."

I think Gaara forgave him though, and he had good intentions. You can read about him on Narutopedia. Here's a quote:

I used to hate him too, till I saw the thought bubble that went over Gaara's head after Gai Sensei leaped in to save Lee during the chunin exams (you know what I'm talking about?) anyway, in the thought bubble you can see Kish and he doesn't look angry or resentful, he just looks so, so sad

aww it was actually really selfless of him. I'm sure he desperately wanted to choose his son over them, but he just couldn't. It was between him and a bunch of innocent villagers.
Opps I forgot. Kish is what I named him in my fanfic. A lot of people think I named him after Kishimotto but I didn't. I named him after my neighbor who is from Tailand (can't spell!") He kinda reminds me of Gaara's dad hehe.
The thought bubble that comes over Gaara's head after his fight with Rock Lee during the chunin exams. See, Gai came out and saved Lee and Gaara couldn't understand why bc Lee had failed. So this thought bubble came over Gaara's head and that's when Gaara got up and said, "I quit."
