Earth-3839 is in the midst of the roaring 20s when the first reports of masked crime fighters appeared in newspapers, starting with the reports an alien strongman and a mysterious figure clad in bat-themed armor. At the world's fair in New York, an attack by the genius criminal, Alexei Luthor, brought together several of these new heroes for the first time. Realizing how well they worked as a team, the group decided to make their new situation a permanent one, and so was born The World's Finest, as the papers came to call them.Green Lantern: Newspaper cartoonist Kyle Rayner discovered what he believed to be an ordinary antique, albeit green, lantern in a pawnshop near his apartment building while out one afternoon. Bringing it home and cleaning the accumulated dust off, he discovered a green ring hidden inside. Pleased with his good luck, Kyle slipped the ring onto his finger, only to be struck by a beam of emerald light from the lantern! Feeling the energy surging through his body, only to collect into the ring. Through experimentation, Kyle discovered he could WILL anything he could imagine into being as an emerald-colored energy construct. Amazed at his new power, Kyle designed a costume and took to the sky to make those with evil hearts beware the light... the light of the Green Lantern!
Batman: Bruce Wayne, multimillionaire, explorer, treasure hunter. After his parents' untimely death in an auto accident when Bruce was 18, the young man consoled himself by using his new fortune to travel the world, exploring ancient sites and discovering lost treasures. While travelling in Egypt, Bruce fell into an underground tomb, the tomb of the ancient bat-sorcerer, Kha. Mortally wounded in his fall, Bruce was at first delirious when Kha's spirit, trapped in the tomb for millennia due to his blasphemous actions in life, confronted him. Kha used his magic to heal Bruce and made a gift of his armor to the young man. Once donning the armor, Bruce discovered he now had the powers of invisibility, flight, and amazing strength and agility. Returning to America, Bruce researched Kha, discovering before that before the sorcerer's fall from grace, he had been a hero of the people, protecting them from bandits and corrupt nobles. Deciding to use his new gifts for good, Bruce donned the armor at night and set out into Gotham, becoming the terror of the criminal element, the Batman!
Superman: A seemingly mild-mannered reporter for the "Daily Planet" newspaper, Clark spent most of his early life hiding the amazing powers he had since childhood. While on assignment in South America, Clark stumbled across ruins that contained a piece of alien technology. Touching the mysterious object, Clark's mind was bombarded with images and knowledge of his homeworld, Krypton. Before their world was destroyed, the Kryptonians had marked Earth as a planet to be terraformed and colonized. Now, this piece of ancient tech attempted to take control of Clark's mind and make him use it to complete its mission. Despite the power of the machine's artificial intelligence, Clark managed to fight back and REJECT its attempts to reprogram his mind, using his full strength to HURL the machine back into space. Discovering an ancient Kryptonian suit among the ruins, Clark decided to openly use his powers to protect the Earth and mankind rather than destroy it.
The Shrinking Man: Dr. Raymond Palmer was exploring the Amazon jungle when he discovered a crashed alien ship no bigger than a soda bottle, filled with humanoid beings no bigger than a human tooth. Bringing them back to his base camp, Raymond was able to establish communication with the tiny beings, who used their technology to shrink Raymond down to their size to better speak with him. Amazed at their technology, Raymond designed a suit incorporating it and fit a version of their molecular manipulator into the belt, allowing him to alter his size at will. Since then, Raymond has balanced his life as a scientist and an adventurer, all the while working to help his new friends repair their ship so they can return to their home planet.
The Accelerated Man: Bartholomew Allen was a chemist working on creating a new super-vitamin formula that would only need to be taken once in a lifetime. On the night he believed he had perfected the formula, a Tesla coil in his lab shorted, striking his chemistry equipment, electrifying the liquids used in the vitamin formula to the point the beakers exploded, soaking Bartholomew in the electrified liquid! When he regained consciousness, Bartholomew was amazed to discover he was even ALIVE, let alone uninjured by the accident. Deciding to clean up his lab, Bartholomew was AMAZED to discover the electricity and the vitamin formula had altered his physiology, allowing him to move at AMAZING speeds! Designing a costume capable of protecting his body from the massive friction caused by his movement, Bartholomew set out as The Accelerated Man to clean up the criminal element terrorizing his town.
Amazonia: Princess Diana of the Amazons discovered the wreckage of a ship washed up on her people's shores and discovered a man still alive among it, bringing him back to her city to be healed. The man introduced himself as Charles, prince of a land called England. During the time Charles spent on Themyscira, he and Diana grew very close, and eventually fell in love. Returning with Charles to England, Diana would aide him in affairs of state during the day and sneaking away at night to battle the criminal element as a heroine the public came to call "Amazonia".
