Description Earth-59. The year was 1944. On a small island off the coast of Scotland, a secret Ally strike force made up of soldiers and costumed adventurers took part in a mission to stop a secret Nazi occult project codenamed Project: Ragnarok. With the mission's successful completion, those who took part became the first generation of what would come to be known as WatchGuard, a UN sanctioned team dedicated to protecting the world from threats both natural and supernatural.

Jackhammer: During the Battle of the Bulge, an American commando troop was pinned down by a German panzer unit. All hope seemed lost... until a massive armored figure SLAMMED down to the ground and began to singlehandedly destroy the tanks, scattering the soldiers like rats. This was Jackhammer, the finest creation of a brilliant engineer, built to end the Nazi threat once and for all. Jackhammer was programmed by digitizing his own creator's brainwaves, instilling the machine with thoughts, feelings and a sense of right and wrong, ensuring he could not corrupted. The U.S. government wanted to create an army of these powerhouse robots, but the scientist died in a house fire before he could give the plans for his machine to them.

American Crusader: During a secret mission that broke up a Nazi lab complex, secret plans were recovered that detailed a chemical formula that could give an ordinary man the power to take down an entire armored division. The plans were transferred to Washington D.C., where Allied scientists were able to recreate the formula. Sadly, due to wartime chemical shortages, only one dose of the serum could be manufactured. To add insult to the injury of turning the Nazi's own supersoldier formula against them, a young black man was chosen to be the project's subject. The serum transformed the young man into a towering he-man with skin that could withstand an artillery shell without a scratch and muscles capable of tearing apart a ten-ton tank. On that day, the American Crusader was born. It wouldn't be discovered until decades later that the serum had had a secondary effect. The cellular regeneration that provides him with his invulnerability has also slowed his aging process to a crawl, seemingly having not aged more than five years in the decades since the experiment.

Torch of Liberty: Elizabeth Sherman is a young woman from Boston, and the granddaughter of the original Torch of Liberty, a costumed mystery man who was among the founders of WatchGuard. As a teenager, Liz discovered she had inherited her grandpa's pyrokinetic abilities when she accidentally set her bed on fire! Taken under her grandpa's wing, the retired hero began to teach Liz the secrets of controlling her elemental powers. Introducing her to the rest of WatchGuard's current roster, he surprised Liz by presenting her with a modified, up-to-date version of his old suit.

Hellboy: After the initial mission that formed WatchGuard, the occult expert in charge, Professor Trevor Bruttonholm, had the unit spread out among the ruins of the Nazi lab, looking for anything that might have come through the portal unseen during the firefight. In a dark corner of the ruins, Trevor and his defenders discovered a small, monkeylike creature with bright red skin, small horns, cloven hooves and a huge right hand made of solid stone. Rather than killing the infant demon, the group took him in and gave the child a name, in retrospect perhaps not the most advantageous one, but a name they all came to use... Hellboy. Raised in WatchGuard's base by Trevor as his own son, Hellboy grew quickly at first, having reached what seems to be his full size in under ten years. Considered the world's greatest paranormal investigator, Hellboy brings his massive strength and durability to the team, alongside his knowledge and collection of occult artifacts, as well as his massive handgun, the Good Samaritan, which can be loaded with a variety of specially designed bullets depending on the specific strengths of weaknesses of his current target.

Abraham Sapien: A strange aquatic humanoid, Abe was discovered in a Washington D.C. basement in 1978, seemingly in suspended animation in a small tank of water. The only clue to his origin was a small paper label stuck to the side of the tank, and dated with the exact day, month and year Abraham Lincoln was shot, which is where he took his name from. Brought to WatchGuard H.Q. and subsequently revived, Abe proved to be a charming, witty and highly intelligent being who refused the offer to be released into the ocean, as he himself had no real clue who or what he was or how he'd even gotten into the tank he'd been discovered in. Abe stayed with WatchGuard in the hopes they might discover clues to his origin, but has since grown to truly like his place on the team, especially when it comes to hanging out with Hellboy and Liz, who he considers his best friends.

The Lobster: A masked hero from New York, the current Lobster is the grandson of the original Lobster, popularly called Lobster Johnson, who began operating during the 1930s. After inheriting his ancestral mansion, the young man stumbled across his grandfather's hidden base below the house and was amazed to discover the Lobster, who most now believed to only be a fictional character, to have been very real, and began to eagerly read the journals his grandfather had kept of his adventures. Updating his grandfather's costume, vehicles and equipment, the new Lobster set out to pick up where his grandfather had left off as New York's hero, capturing mob bosses, corrupt police officers and all other manner of criminals and villains, leaving them bound and gagged among the evidence of their crimes, each branded on the forehead with his trademark lobster claw symbol. After teaming with agents of WatchGuard to stop a group of smugglers stealing cultural treasures from around the world, the Lobster was offered his grandfather's place among the ranks.

Roger: A recent addition to the team, Roger was discovered in a medieval alchemist's lab beneath the ruins of Czege Castle in Romania in 1996. Brought back to WatchGuard H.Q., Roger was initially reanimated with a powerful current of electricity and, after a brief, confused rampage, explained his origin to the team and the researchers. Roger's creator was a brilliant alchemist who, after many years of study, was on the cusp of discovering the secret of the Philosopher's Stone and bringing wealth and prosperity to his modest homeland. However, the Catholic Church had grown disdainful and paranoid of any knowledge or way of life they did not approve of, and had sent soldiers to destroy the alchemist and his entire village. Forming a humanoid figure out of humble mud and clay, infused with a stewed mixture of herbs and blood, the alchemist harnessed a bolt of lightning to bring his creation life. The first words Roger remembers hearing were those of his father. "You have been given the spark of life for a purpose; to protect our community. Go and complete your mission!" Roger was very good at his job, and destroyed the soldiers the church had set on the village. Sadly, the lightning's power was temporary and eventually, Roger always returned to dormancy until he could be reawakened. Hoping to relieve this potentially powerful ally of the need to be repeatedly shocked, WatchGuard scientists inserted a small but powerful electrical generator into his chest, providing him with a virtually limitless supply of energy.
