Description
18"x22"Graphite pencils 3H/HB/2B/4B, Blending stump & brush, Kneadable eraser, Tombow elastomer eraser.
Strathmore 500 series bristol board (smooth plate finish)
This is my entry for The National Open Art Competition UK. Unfortunately it wasn't selected for the shortlist but I'm pleased with the piece as it personally represents a big leap in scale, detail and patience. It is roughly twice the size of my previous work and I learnt a lot working on this beast.
I'd like to thank Samantha Barbour for kindly letting me use and modify her original photo as reference... blind-eyephotography.deviantar…
Detail and stage-by-stage shots will be up soon on my website/blog and Facebook page...

Now this is perfection! What a detailed drawing, amazing work
How do you get the white hairs on top of the dark parts? Do you erase parts, or leave little strands open? Would love to know how you did this!!

Thanks! I outline hairs and shade the surrounding area lightly. When I fill in the area with final detail, I use a kneadable eraser and fine pointed tombow eraser to remove the graphite. Then it gets blended so it's smooth, and repeat until I'm happy. Here's the stage-by-stage process shots made into an animated gif: gfycat.com/UnequaledAgitatedHu…
