I felt like trying to make a tutorial, so here you go. :<Part 1

Yes I didn't mention it in the tutorial, but I prefer using the MLP-VectorClub's cutie marks (well except in this example 'cause the cutie mark was really well drawn) rather than tracing the sketch. It's both faster and more accurate.

Wow. I never new Inkscape could do that. The clipping for the eyes, the stroke-to-path conversion, wow. I always use paths for my vectors and let me tell you, width consistency is very hard. Thanks for making this tutorial.

OH. MY. GOD. THANK. YOU. SO. MUCH. FOR. THIS.
I made my first vectored sketch! And, it came out AMAZING!!
I learned a few things from this: How to get nice and clear lines WITHOUT making a path, saving the file correctly, and, how to do eye gradients, well, gradients in general correctly!
I am honestly so happy, and I thank you for this tutorial. Without this, I probably would've made vectors the way I USED to... oops. Also, I wouldn't vector Rarity as much or even at all without this tutorial, because of her hair gradients. I even checked out your videos, also very helpful!
I will use this tutorial forever, until I can remember all of this by myself!
You have restored my faith in humanity

Now, I'm having trouble with this gradient of the eye.
When I attempt it, it gives me the chosen color of the gradient, not the gradient itself.
Am I doing something wrong?

With the overlapping issues, you can just use the convert to path method there as well, as long as you're happy with the stroke placement beforehand.
The sclera? Never heard of that before, I'll add it to my vocab. Thanks.

Absolutely not. Turning your stroke into a path is literally ruining the vector.
I was ok with this at first, since I had no other choice to taper the strokes, but now that I use ponyscape, it just sounds like the dumbest thing to do.
You should always keep as much strokes as possible, because you might want to reuse it or tweak things a little in the future.

That's why I was against it too, for a while. It's just that the lines look so bland with the default thickest going throughout the whole thing. Also, some things are impossible (you try the hind leg nook?) with simply lines. However, I believe lines can still be used to speed up some things, like the lines in some of the ponies' hair.
Ponyscape has remedied this? I demand that you explain how. By the way, I actually completely agree with your points, but who the helm downloads our vectors to do crazy stuff with them? They only ever use the exported raster... *sigh*

Well ponyscape have powerstrokes, which is the equivalent of the width stroke tool in AI.
I don't make paths for the outlines anymore, it's all strokes.

you... you can mask several objects at once!? That canges EVERYTHING!
Well, not really, but it'll make vectoring the eyes much easier and faster for me.
Another thing: the sclera(strange word) of the left eye lies over the face outline. Normally only the eyelashes should do that, but not the sclera. Was that intentional?

You're right we usually let the body stroke overlap over the sclera, but most of the time, the cheek is made of a curvy stroke that goes well with the elliptical shape of the eye.
As you can see in this sketch, the head stroke has a sharp node on the cheek and I just thought it would make the eye look weird if it was under this stroke. So yeah, that was intentional.

ok, I'm having several problems on this tutorial. One is getting the second stop on the eyes for the Gradient and the other part was trying to get rid of the overlapping part of the eyes. When made a second layer of Sclera and removed it's fill, I try to crop, but then after selecting all the parts of the eyes, minus the black line and lashes, almost all the eye disappears and theres this small black dot there. Any chance you can record the whole eye process step by step in like a video?

A minor point regarding node deletion (referenced in the eye segment): In Inkscape, Ctrl+Del deletes a node, but preserves the angles of adjoining nodes, not only making the process faster but reducing inaccuracy caused by the better-known method of 'twiddle it 'til it looks right'. Then, all one needs to do is convert the cusp node to a smooth, then to a corner and viola, corner node with no change to adjoining nodes.

Just so you know, the colored part of the eye is called the iris. The pupil is the black part.
