I think there was some sort of huge war, think about it...
Most of their parents aren't around (AJ, Scootaloo, Fluttershy, Dashie...) theyr'e skeptical about outsiders, and Equestria is constantly under attack.
Plus the constant references to the Elements of Harmony, the Crystal Empire problem, so on and so forth...
So maybe AJ's parents died because of the war? Like..her mom was killed in the crossfire and her dad served and died? Why do people make fun of her? You wouldn't go and make fun of the kid who's mom died of cancer and father died in Afghanistan, right? ;3;
