I never worked with a-oxide sculpt nor do i know what it is or how it works (never heard of it before) but if it is like any other air dry clay (i assume it is something like magic sculpt /apoxy sculpt) then i don't see why you wouldn't be able to use it instead of milliput.

I have to say, that hair is amazing!
And I want to correct you on one thing: Milliput is not "air drying", it is a two part epoxy, which dries because of a chemical reaction between the two parts. Air has nothing to do with it, it even hardens submerged into water!

Wow, thank you so much for this tutorials. They helped me a lot?
Is it possible that you do another for coloring sculptures? Or can you tell me what paint you use? The simple acrylic ones?
Β am afraid of messing up my sculpture with the color, any tip would be kind ^^Β°

you can use cheap acrylics if your a hobbyist or just starting out, how ever when you want to sell it is advisable to use artist grade acrylics as they have a much better light fastness and are better pigmented (more pigment, less fillers) i use pastel dust and mica powder a lot too to paint my sculptures with

Thank you for all 3 tutorials. I plan on starting out with small, simple figures, then moving up into working with armatures. I sculpted many things back in high school, but that was decades ago...>.> I appreciate the time and effort you put into these tutorials.

what clay do u use for your beautiful sculpture?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to kazzama [2015-03-12 16:57:34 +0000 UTC]

Polymer clays, usually i use a mix of super sculpey and sculpey firm, for thin/fragile parts i use apoxy sculpt (air dry clay)

Wow, this is so f***** helpful
But I still have one question: How do you grab your final sculpture to put it into the oven? I always - ALWAYS - have the problem that I want to grab my sculpture, I grab it, and then it bulges in. ItΒ΄s so nasty Please help me

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to UnicornCat [2014-09-08 07:15:50 +0000 UTC]

When i do them in parts i grab the armature side or the already baked side :3 When i do a piece in whole i usually make the base out of air drying clay so i can handle it while sculpting further and eventually to put it in the oven.

mangakasan In reply to Read-the-Wind [2014-05-30 21:25:18 +0000 UTC]

i use sculpey clays (polymer clay) and apoxy sculpt (airdrying clay) but i did mention some of it at the 1st part of this tutorial

I really, really appreciate that you included one of your first sculpts here. It honestly makes the whole idea of learning to sculpt less intimidating. Though as I keep looking at tutorials I'm realizing my choice of original sculpey may not have been the best lol. xD

mangakasan In reply to SelenaRH [2014-04-12 22:49:13 +0000 UTC]

Well we all start of somewhere and improve from there haha and don't worry about your current clay, sure it wont be a very good choice for selling pieces but it is a good and affordable clay to start out with :3

SelenaRH In reply to mangakasan [2014-04-12 23:00:39 +0000 UTC]

True. It's amazing how long it lasts. xD I actually got it a couple years ago and it's still good.

Trying to make a little dragon, though I forgot the wing armature (oops OxO lol), so it'll be a wingless dragon. xD

Hope to someday get as good as you~ <3

Thought I'd share something I discovered. I realized that if I shove needles through a piece of cardboard, and then put tiny pieces (like eyes or claws) on the needles and dry them with a hair dryer it makes them easier to put on the rest of the model~

You've probably already discovered this buuut. Thought I'd share, just in case you hadn't, or in case you have a better technique.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to SelenaRH [2014-04-13 06:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Usually i make my eyes out of resin which cure in a mold and teeth and claws out of air dry clay which cures hard without baking (which i shove into the piece after they are cured) but your idea can work just aswell

MilA-10 [2014-04-06 15:05:43 +0000 UTC]

thank you for this great tutorial!
I have two questions:
when you do the pre-bake, do you keep the ''real'' baking temperature and just bake it half the time it should be?
Do you know if it also works good for the soft sculpey?Β

Which kind of paint do you use (very liquid or with higher viscosity)? How do you do to dont ''fill'' the texture on your sculpting when you paint it?
thanks a lot!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to MilA-10 [2014-04-06 15:17:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Now onto your questions, when i do my pre-bakes i bake the sculpt for about 10 or 15 minutes between the 110 and 130 Celsius degrees, basically these pre/in between are just to harden parts that are finished so i cant smudge them out when i progress after, so it doesn't need a very long and thorough bake.
As for painting i use acrylic paints, (you can even use the very cheap ones you can buy from supermarkets) but i use acrylics from the brand amsterdam which are more lightfast and better in pigment quality (as you can imagine you cant sell stuff that will fade out to soon or is of bad quality XD) also i use pastels and mica powders a lot to paint my sculptures with, as for keeping the texture and avoid visible strokes of piled up paint, i either airbrush the acrylic paints on or i thin them with water and use a soft brush and just keep layering until it looks even and without patches, when you work with pastels you just dust them on and fixate each layer, with this technique your textures/details wont go lost either, just basically don't slap to mach paint on it at once, just keep the paint thin and in small quantity on your brush, it will take a lot longer this way but the result is worth it

Mission impossible, btw. Can i use this clay, its kinda for beginners:www.google.hr/url?q=http://www… that is gray clay

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to Funkygame [2014-01-19 14:45:28 +0000 UTC]

i am not familiar with that brand of clay but as far as i know you can use any kind of clay, it's just the quality varies a lot in different types and brands of clay, some are very durable after baking and some are very brittle, also in use and texture clays can vary a lot, some are stiffer or softer then others, i use super sculpey and firm because the ss is very easy to use and the firm to mix with to add additional strength to the sculpt once baked. (Tho i use Apoxy sculpt for really fragile parts or to reinforce things such as legs and tails) but i guess you can best start of with a cheap clay when you are beginning, get a feel to it and if you dont like sculpting after you havent wasted to much money on premium materials.
