I have a question~ ^u^ What about painting (i mean like how do YOU do it...)? And what paint do you recommend for painting sculptures?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to huskylovers33 [2013-01-06 09:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Before i paint i spray on a primer coat, this makes sure the paint can be applied without problems (some clays refuse paints or needs many layers before it catches on) then i usually i combine traditional mediums to paint my sculptures such as acrylic paints, pastel dust/pearl ex dust, but acrylic paints work wonderfully it dries fast and if you give it a couple of layers the colors look vivd and covers completely without any weird patches, i use matte varnish and or fixative to seal the paints/pastels so it wont chip off and when its all done i give it an extra bit of glazing for even better protection

Wow, i never really noticed how much it takes to paint a sculpture, but I understnad why it would. Thanks a lot, I've been working on an Espeon sculpture, and im at the point where I have to paint, i felt clueless before you commented this. Oh yeah, one last question... what acrylic paint brand do you recommend? I have some Windsor and Newton paints, but they were only 21ml tubes and i've already used up a good portion of it...

mangakasan In reply to huskylovers33 [2013-01-06 17:56:47 +0000 UTC]

i suppose those brands will do :3, it actually doesnt matter much which brand you use, i use varies of brands and it all works just fine, just the cheaper ones you might have to paint on more layers and are less vivid in color as the more pricy ones.

oh man this is really amazing! first i thought that traditional sculpting can never good as the digital. But this looks so real and cool i will try it out thank you^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to xXCougarXx [2012-12-25 12:23:53 +0000 UTC]

well i think the best part about traditional sculpting/art is that you can actually touch it and its not trapped in a screen

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXCougarXx In reply to mangakasan [2012-12-25 13:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes thats right i agree. Maybe the good thing in digital sculting is that you can animate it and make it move. But i think the traditinal is more fun to do

Licht-chan [2012-12-09 18:51:28 +0000 UTC]

What size shaper do you suggest? I was looking at size 0 firm and I'm wondering if that's a good size for texturing fur.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to Licht-chan [2012-12-09 20:04:18 +0000 UTC]

i have size 0 and 2 but mainly use size 2 as it is not to small and not to big and still makes very nice small details, i use 0 for really tiny details like eye lid wrinkles and stuff (firm is best tho as soft hardly is able to leave marks, its to soft for most clays so whatever size you pic go for firm :3

Metal armature and baking...
How does that work?
I mean, doesn't the expanding metal of the armature crack the actual sculpture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to Mancoin [2012-07-13 08:53:34 +0000 UTC]

This iron wire or aluminum wires dont really expand on the temperatures required neither does the foil or tape influence the durability of the sculptures, if anything they add to their strength and durability

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mancoin In reply to mangakasan [2012-07-13 09:01:40 +0000 UTC]

well metals always expand in higher temperatures, no matter what they are, but I do understand what you mean - they don't have an effect on the actual sculpture.
Alright, because I bought air-drying clay just because I was scared of the armature cracking the work

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to Mancoin [2012-07-13 09:46:44 +0000 UTC]

air drying clay works well enough it depends on the type of clay you use cheaper brands like sculpey III are very brittle and are bound to crack on bigger works, super sculpey can crack when it reacts to sudden temperature change, but these cracks appear on the service and can easily be fixed. but so far i had none of my work falling apart even after sanding them and working them some more (sculpting over baked clay/handling and painting) so it's safe to say armatures don't weaken your sculpture (usually its even advised on oven baked clays description that sculpting over an bulked armature frame is desirable)

Mancoin In reply to mangakasan [2012-07-13 10:22:40 +0000 UTC]

I see...

I purchased FIMO air clay, as i've read it's one of the better brands. ( some cracks appeared... even during the actual sculpting process )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mangakasan In reply to Mancoin [2012-07-13 12:09:54 +0000 UTC]

i dont know much about fimo clays just that the best clays of that brand are fimo puppen and fimo classic, from what i readed about these is that they are very sturdy and durable (both are polymer clays that needs to be baked) as for good air drying brands i hear apoxy sculpt is a good strong air drying clay to sculpt with

Awesome tutorial! Will there be a painting one in the future too?

The "you can only get better with practice" bit at the bottom made me laugh so much xD I thought the black kitty had been painted LOL I didn't realise he was so badly burnt until I read the text. You must have been so annoyed But accidents happen and they've helped you become an amazing sculptress

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us
