Geo,thank you very much brother!Im glad you like it.This time I decided to work again on full color process instead of beginning in grayscale.Im on to how I can apply my traditional coloring knowledge into the digital without making it look moody or limited in terms of color depth and pattern.I did the same technique on the previous Tavern artwork for the series and really enjoyed working that way.Besides of giving a nice perception of color control, values and contradictions is also a great practice. Its very often that my works suffer from a color limitation so Im trying to work on that issue.

are you laying the color down as you would in grey scale ? light to dark ? i bet you are playing with opacity alot ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ManthosLappas In reply to twistedmentality [2010-06-03 02:28:19 +0000 UTC]

Actually I begin with a very simple mock up having very basic colors lied down, indicating where my shadows and lights should be,and then ,Im working along the way by adding more color variations from dark to light always.Later on,by applying in opacity layers,or even color layers to set some mood and then flatten the image and going back adding on top more coloring,on a normal layer, not adjustable, eventually reaching to some satisfying point that I will have to then add those color adjustment layers.I hope I make sense,I picked a hard time to try to explain what I needed to,Im sorry. If you need anything else to ask me,please do so brother.Im always here to help.

whats flattening the image do besides brings all the layers together ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ManthosLappas In reply to twistedmentality [2010-06-03 17:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Actually as far as I know, it just brings all the layers together by blending each behavior of those into one.In other circumstances,if you would try to merge, let's say,3 layers on top that are set in "overlay"multiply, color burn" you get a very weird result and the merging would not resemble the appearance of those layers before they are merged.instead of flattened. So,I dont know any other difference other than that all the layers are collapsed to the background really.

twistedmentality In reply to ManthosLappas [2010-06-04 18:11:23 +0000 UTC]

yea ive noticed that when merging some layers with overlay and color burn. some ood shit happens but doesn't with just flattening. made me wonder.

ManthosLappas In reply to twistedmentality [2010-06-04 19:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Exactly,Im still not sure why this is happening with the merging process so I just simply flatten my image while keeping some backups of the layers that might proved handy on the progression.Nevertheless, working on flattened image leads to a more efficient computer's performance.Personally,I do suggest flattening the image one a while, since having way too many layers of different behavior will eventually cause frustration and weird results once you move to merge some of those to save space on the workplace or even get a smaller size file.I do flatten but making sure keeping few needed layers in backup groups in the file that Im working in.

It's Shrek first thing in the morning nice work, I also agree that the blue of the sky, which normally would be grey or red in this situation helps highlight and contrast against the lava, like the eruption has just started and the sky hasn't become laden with ash yet, which would be a kind of creepy and theatening sight (aame with the beast )
