Description
This was my entry for the "10 Commandments of Deviousness" contest - [link]Winners shown here: [link]
Magic is everywhere. In Nature, in Love,
in Friendship, in Smiles.
It is part of every beautiful thing and experience.
It also exists in the Hearts, Souls and Minds of men and women that perceive it and believe in it.
They are, like I am, the Keepers of Magic and Magical Creatures. Only we can see them!
And that is why some people state
that "Unicorns & Magic do not exist".
To prove it, I opened the "Secret Gate" that I keep
to show you a hidden place,
where an Unicorn runs free, surrounded by Magic!
Do you BELIEVE in Unicorns & Magic?

Thank you for providing the stocks that made it possible
for me to create this work!
Creation:
Details [link] and [link]
Process:
It all started when I saw that there was a challenge to prove the existance of Unicorns and Magic...
My friends know that I believe in Magic and Unicorns and Fairies and Elves and in all magical creatures! They have filled my life with joy and happiness since I was a little girl.
So I found a beautiful horse first and worked ours extracting the background and smudging the hair. Then I searched for a Unicorn Horn and changed it's shape a bit, and the color. I had the first background that would lead the landscape (the trees you see with leaves now, are the original trees in the first background). The other backgrounds were combined to provide light (a lot of them was masked), and the one with the trees I loved to add the magical forest of legends.
I enhanced colors with new layers and painting over them, using Gaussian Blur and Screen properties.
Then I added the water and masked everything but the pond you see.
Then I placed the flowers to the left, used one leaf to create all the leaves to the left and then started working with very tiny parts of the purchased flower to create the branches to the right.
The tools I used the most were to change colors (color balance and Hue) and exposure. Even yellow flowers were used (changing the hue).
The lotus were extracted and new flowers were placed, removing the others with the clone tool.
At the beginning I had a lady watching the scene, but I finally removed it. Some other details were also changed.
In sum, I did not count how many layers I had on the work, but there were many (imagine only creating the leaves of the trees, flower by flower in little pieces! It's all threaded flowers!! And then, matching and balancing each ...
It was nice to get inspired again after such a long time without having any ideas to work on
And - as usual - should you want to know anything about how I did something, feel free to ask. I'll be happy to help!

Hahaha! You answered my question!!
GOOD for you! Yes, having magic in our hearts and believing in it and in Unicorns is something we should never lose!
I am very happy you like it this much , and even if I donΒ΄t win (which is difficult due to the talent that artists have here at dA), I really enjoyed and had fun creating this!

nice work M
.....but....you asked for critique so I will give it in a commend....hope you don't mind....I think that the horn is not in the middle of the head.
I think it should be more to the front....I'm not a specialist in unicorns but
and the unicorn is to sharp on the edges in my opinion....if you look at the edge between the back legs you can see a small lighter edge because the light is comming from the left...but the light is also from the background as that is a light part.
so I think that there should be more places on the unicorn with a small fragile lighter edge.
I think that if done right the unicorn will be more a part of the scenery and not in front.
anyway...hope you don't mind...it's just my humble opinion

Hello Gerrit!!
You are always such a guide for me when it comes to critique ! And I certainly appreciate that a lot!
You know, I had doubts about that and asked my daughter, her boyfriend, my husband and my son and all of them said it was ok ! I was unsure of it.
Ok. IΒ΄ll see what I can do to correct it because it has hair that I need to redo.
You are right on that light! I will try to improve it , thank you!
About it being more part of the scenary, I could only achieve that by modifying too much now, maybe using more plants in front and moving the unicorn a bit more to the river. Not sure if I can achieve it, but IΒ΄ll give it a try.
Thanks again, dear Gerrit, for your thoughtful comment!!!

I wouldn't move the unicorn, just to place it more in the scenery....I think by placing more light on some edges will
place the unicorn more in the scenery...maybe you need a doll (the ones they use for sketching...the wooden one) and play with
a torch to see how the light falls there are other ways of course....but it might help you to understand light on a subject.
to make it look more natural oh...and it depends on the material as well...one reflects more than others
good luck and have fun
ps. if you have a question just ask...who knows I might have an answer

Too late ...
I remember having seen those dolls , but I don't remember where.
I'll try to get one, it's a GREAT idea!
You always have such good tips for me, Gerrit, I appreciate that!
And by all means, as you see I'll use and abuse of that offer!

I had no clue that such a movie existed! Now I will check on YouTube
to see if there is at least a part of it... so curious !!!
You are asking which tool I used to combine them?
I used Image/Adjustments/Hue-Saturation, Exposure and Color Balance.
With those I worked on this... I keep changing things until I get
the color I want . It's amazing what you can achieve by playing
around with them !!!
You are most welcome for the faves!

I saw the trailer at YouTube... maybe on the movie are scenes
that aren't shown on the trailer there because I couldn't
see my colors on it (which is probable!)
You are most welcome!

It is fascinating to me how my works "get alive".
I am just the guiding hand, but each element, each flower, each grass has life of itΒ΄s own and it dictates what colors it wants to be !
It is magical to me being able to do this... might sound funny, I know... but I donΒ΄t know how to explain it differently!!!
Thank you VERY much!!

I think I say this everytime you post a new work, but I think your work improves with each new submission This is so clear--has such clarity--that I can hardly tell it's a manipulation. It looks more like digital art--hand drawn. Fantastic work manwathiell!!!

Hello, dear John! Your praise makes me blush, but it also makes me happy
! I've worked hard on this but with such enthusiasm and happiness. I thought all the time about our "Becoming the Forest" and how we turned better friends while talking about Unicorns and Fairies hahaha! Remember?
You know, it has very little painting work: I painted a bit of diferent shades of green on the distant trees to make them stand out a bit more, then I painted the black plants at the river (it's a brush, but the lines were cut, so I had to paint over them). And the horse has a lot of smudging work, (and the colored grasses and flowers to the right a bit of smudging).
But that's all the paint this has! I uploaded the procedure files on my scraps so it could be seen there.
I'm very happy you like it, dear John!!!!

Yea yea yea...M this is beautiful. The colors are magical. The scene is delightful and mysterious. I love how the pink branched leafs frame the ominous castle in the distanced background. And the lily pads in the water breathe a nice additional element into the telling of this fantasy. I sincerely wish you the best for the contest
