As did I and likely a sizeable percentage of us viewing this page.  But even as a kid of his mid teens, I knew something was "off" about that kit.  The recessed center line "trench" that encircled the craft seemed too thick while the convex "lens" structure of the upper and lower hull sections seemed too shallow.  Plus the "trench" was not "greeblied" enough.  Now, that last, well, that could be corrected using the same method the original miniature builders used; just populate it with more tank, care engine model railroad kit details.  But the former, that was probably beyond the skill level of the "casual" kit builder.  Yeah, in theory, one could have narrowed those trench inset pieces, but then the cockpit "cone" and the escape pod elements (or whatever they were meant to be) would not have fit.  It was a well "bugga-bear" as my grandmother occasionally said.

BTW, I feel like an idiot   Based upon your render, I gather the parabolic dish that was sheered in 'Return of the Jedi" was replaced with the partial cylinder cross section for "The Force Awakens"?  I never noticed that when I finally saw the flick on "Starz".  D'oh!
