Description First of all:
*CALLING THIS CHARACTER "EGGMAN" IS INCORRECT. ALL AMERICAN VERSIONS ARE CALLED DR. ROBOTNIK. ONLY THE JAPANESE VERSION IS TO BE CALLED EGGMAN.
Also, to differenciate, AoSTH "Pingas" Robotnik can be called IVO because he states it as his name in one episode and SatAM-Robotnik as Julian Robotnik because it's his true name also stated in an episode and reinforced by the comics.*

Cartoon-Robotnik VS MaRa-Robotnik.

This is a freebie for (he didn't ask, I just felt like it and my muse agreed, lucky him) who's a new Robotnik fan wanting to learn more about him and how to draw him so here's a comparison in the differences when I draw him in cartoon style (right) to a more realistic style(left). It says RL-ish because you can't make him 100% realistic without making him look very different. His design doesn't permit it.

This is a "quickie" for me because I didn't pay much attention to detail. There's mistakes too and I know so don't point them out if you see them.

See, in the cartoon style he's very easy to pose and add certain expressions. In general, cartoon Julian has the anatomy of a Silverback Gorilla. Short legs, long arms, wide shoulders, big gut and egg shaped head.
Just see for yourselves. XD
Julian: [link]
Gorilla: [link] POSING!: [link] (I just found it)

When drawn realistically you have to worry about anatomy.
Now, the things I add as personal touches are muscle to the flesh arm and legs (guy weights about 400 lbs, he MUST have muscle in those legs to hold that weight), longer legs, looks less fat because his torso shrinks, facial bone structure changes, longer cape for aesthetic reasons. Longer mustache(cuz I lieks it), larger boots(visual balance).
The twist or grimace of his mouth is also a personal touch due to the bone structure I give his face, is not just there because of a whim.
~LucrataNexarii has a similar shape to his mouth because, like me, she draws him with a realistic bone structure to his face.

So there, welcome to the fandom and have fun working out your own way of drawing him.

Thats normal. As MaRa already said, his proportions are a bit strange. But even I "mastered" it, so I'm sure you will too Just take a few looks on MaRas pics (which give me a smile every time I look at them because of this pure awesomness) and try to see how she did it on some places.

Sometimes when I find a pose hard for him I draw a normal body then add the fat. That's the best way to make him look more natural and realistic. His cartoon proportions are terrible. XD

Ah, nothing like a return to our roots in Robotnik love. I have to agree with you in its certainly not easy to apply anatomic accuracy considering his... for lack of a better word girth. XD They both turned out very well though, so you'll forgive me if I go relook through your gallery works. ^_^

Of course I forgive you.

Is not so much his 'girth' than the length of his torso and limbs.

The comics have also been calling him Eggman since the early hundred-issues. While Julian Robotnik may be his canon name, Eggman is also quite clearly his canon nickname; also, raging so hard over it is a sure way to get people to ignore you completely.

Ahhhh, Julian, how I miss you. I always did like the old design; it was "goofy" enough to be kid-safe, but also just creepy enough to make him look like a real villain, an image perpetuated by his SatAm voice actor. GOD that guy was well-cast, he's the only Robotnik voice I've ever really approved of, and sounded downright EVIL.

As for your design, I like it! You made a quite logical call on the muscle. Most people assume that "fat" means "unfit," and while that's true as far as body fat percentage, fat just hides muscle, it doesn't replace it. A fat person can actually have a very powerful build, it's just hidden under all the chub, and no one would ever suspect. It is worth noting that muscle "tone," or rather muscle definition, generally decreases as body fat increases due to the fact that the more fat there is over the muscle, the less visible the contours of the musculature become; personally though I think you've just about nailed it with the balance here. Diggin' it

MaRaMa-Artz In reply to Adam-Novagen [2012-06-02 18:35:29 +0000 UTC]

That's because it IS Eggman in the comics since issue #76 when ANOTHER Robotnik came in with a design changed to reflect the video games and he officially started using the name later. Robo-Robotnik was a separate character, Julian Robotnik was "killed off" in issue #50 and he was never once called Eggman.

Julian is canon to the SatAM cartoon, not the archie comics. His canon name is Julian. His last name is unknown. AoSTH's canon name is Ivo and his last name is Robotnik, as is the american version of the Genesis games where his name is stated as thus in the manuals just as his design of completely black eyes was changed. It was created in the US/EUR because the nickname Eggman was idiotic and they gave the char a more menacing and evil interpretation, unlike JP's more humour oriented one.

When SEGA of JP decided to merge the fans from both countries they made Eggman call himself Robotnik in Sonic Adventure 1 to avoid confusion(adding Sonic's "Look, a giant talking Egg!" to plant the seed, then in SA2 they used both nicknames Dr. Robotnik as his actual name and Eggman as a bad nickname used by Sonic and Tails to annoy him until they made Eggman his official nickname later and retconned the name Robotnik completely and ignoring the fact that he has a grandfather and cousing with the last name Robotnik, making it final in Sonic Generations. The current game-Eggman has NO name. He is simply called Dr. Eggman as a nickname.

I understand what you meant with it but I'm not "raging hard", I'm stating facts so the NEW fans are clear on the origins. It is -incorrect- to call this character, or the one from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, or the one in Archie comics pre-issue #50 or even the american Genesis games as "Eggman" because they were NEVER called such and are completely different characters, with completely different backgrounds and personalities. Unique in their own way, even if they originate from The Eggman of JP.
And some might ignore me(those who are stubborn in thinking they are right just because they believe they are) but there have also been many kids and newer fans that only know of the games or recent comics, who have asked me about it and have been very interested about the story of the character and name origins.

So that bold text is the trigger for them to ask me why and I will enlighten them.
--

As for the rest of your comment. Thanks for the lovely praise. And speaking of voices, I do hold a special place for the late Deem Bristow(SA 1 & 2 and Sonic Shuffle), who IMO, was the best Eggman VA out there. His voice also made Eggman menacing even in his goofy moments unlike Mike Pollock who sounds goofy no matter what emotions he's trying to make Eggman convey.

The reason fat people have muscle is because they needed to carry around the weight of it. That is IF the person IS physically active. If they're bed ridden and unmoving they won't have much. And Julian here is a 400 pound man who walks around without needing to catch his breath and he can even freaking RUN! So there MUST be muscle under there for that. Even if he spends a lot of time in his chair. Most of the muscle will be in his legs and torso, thus why they look so thick aside from the fat.

I also know of someone who's fat but has a slight abs shape in his gut because he works lifting heavy stuff so I tell him he's got toned abs under there, just hidden, but developed enough to show their shape through the fat.

Ok, I'm done. You can go back to your regular life-schedule.

I thought it was Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his real name was Julian Ivo. Though I always did think it was odd that he'd use his last name as his first name.

Which episode is that? Blast from the Past part 2 during Take Over? It's been a while since I've watched my SatAM collection. Being a Saturday, I should indulge!

MaRaMa-Artz In reply to Klebkatt [2012-06-02 15:58:08 +0000 UTC]

AoSTH gets introduced in an episode by Scratch as Dr Ivo Robotnik(I still remember the spanish translation pronunciating it 'evo' instead of 'i-vo').

Yes, in Blast From the Past he's called Julian by King Accorn and "Uncle Julian" by Snively until the coup when he states "The name is no longer Julian. From this day forward, I am...Robotnik."
and in Doomsday Project at the very end when all's going to hell and he leaves Snively behind, Snivy says "You don't give me enough credit... Julian!"
There is NO mention of "Ivo" in SatAM. Only the comics most likely mixed it up.

I also like to refer to the Fleetway comic Robotnik as Ovi as he was Ovi Kintobor before turning evil and becoming then Ivo Robotnik. I guess Archie comics used that too. The whole name mix up is from people treating "Robotnik" as ONE character with many forms but I separate them and treat them all as unique characters.

Oh, in AoStH. That's probably where I got it from then. I was unaware there was a comic based off of SatAM till the second book of End Game. Though thinking back on it, they may have used Ivo in Archie-verse till all the new games came out.

Fleetway...you mean Sonic the Comic? I haven't read it really. I generally consider SatAM Robotnik the same as Archie Robotnik (prior to End Game) but nothing like nor similar to Eggman or the Eggman from the games. I don't consider AoStH to be anything but crap, so it's not apart of anything in my mind save the name 'Ivo' for him.

MaRaMa-Artz In reply to Klebkatt [2012-06-03 01:21:46 +0000 UTC]

The comics actually started with a weird mix of the old Genesis game, with SatAM's version of Robotnik and the humor from AoSTH but later became more serious and focused more on SatAM with some game elements and characters thrown in. All to please the Sonic fans who knew of all those things.
AoSTH is truly retarded but hey, it's Sonic! And I watched that cartoon first before SatAM came along and blew my mind so I guess I have some fond memories of it because I was already a fan with the goofy idiot before he became badass.
Currently I am unable to watch it without cringing every few seconds but I secretly enjoy it. THAT Robotnik had his own awesome moments too. He was a normal human but he was a beast that could lift huge machines and thrown them and break down walls in anger. Also the only guy to ever actually catch Sonic and wring his neck until his eyes bulged even if he just threw him into a cell he could escape from later. That scene is unforgettable for me! He got my respects right there.

I enjoyed watching it too when I was a kid, but then I got older and, well, I think Nostalgia Critic said it best when he compared AoStH to SatAM. One got high and the other cared. XD

I can only recall the Chaos Emerald story arc in AoStH fondly. I remember my little self being upset about there only being 4 Emeralds covered when there were 7. I really liked that each Emerald held a special power, like immortality or the ability to control time. Perhaps it limits the idea of the jewels holding unlimited power, but to actually know what that power was and why it'd be really bad for Robotnik to get them was cool to me and I carried that over into my fancomic of Sonic I had years ago.

Ah, the good ol' days.

Yes, it has several episodes that had a lot of potential with the plot. I loved those too. I also loved the one where he becomes Super Robotnik, except for the inevitable highlight of his butt as a weakpoint. He did humiliate Sonic a few times and in several episodes.
Ivo Robotnik is also the only one with so much backstory and relatives around. Mother, cousin, unrequited love, a "son" and I always thought he was unbearably adorable as a baby. He looked like a water drop. XD

Aside from the Chaos Emerald episodes, my memory of AoStH is hit and miss.

I remember Robotnik building a kid, I think he built himself a wife, the female hedgehog he built to fool Sonic, I somewhat remember the episode with the mole miner...something about sloths? lol Oh, and where the word HATE was somehow tattooed into his teeth.

I know a lot of people hated it, but I did like Sonic Underground. That's the 'funny' Robotnik I remember most. I liked the one episode where Robotnik tried on a corset to have a nicer build, but he was so fat that it busted open. XD

I didn't get to see a lot of SU but I was at least glad what I did see was in Spanish. Jaleel White as a singer was just... no. But I was biased and upset they copied SatAM and made the "Awesome-Robotnik" act silly. I should find the series someday and watch them all just to know the plot and see what nice things they did come up with. I did like having people willingly being part robots in the series and a society about it.

Klebkatt In reply to MaRaMa-Artz [2012-06-06 02:20:29 +0000 UTC]

I feel Sonic Underground was Ben Hurst's last attempt at getting SatAM, even in an alternate form, back on air. Meant to be a spiritual successor if you will. Poor guy really wanted to put out SatAM season 3. The only thing I didn't like about his ideas for a s3 or a movie continuation was that Nicole would be god like. That just seems...really out of place.

As for the comedy in SU, maybe the higher ups didn't want something all that serious? I don't know. All I can really do is speculate.

SU is up on YouTube last I knew. At least some episodes are. It can be ridiculous in concept, but it's okay for a watch. Probably something to do for a weekend with coke and popcorn.

Oh, and the mini music videos in each episode are rarely good. Skip 'em.

I never really developed an interest in the characters in SU, besides our favorite villain and hedgehog; and uncle chuck of course. Maybe because I didn't get to watch it regularly? It came on very early in the morning when I was in high school. It was the only reason I would force my self up for school, and I'd try to watch it while getting ready and scarfing down something for breakfast. I'd always have to leave before the ending of every episode though. The damned bus lady picked us up a full hour before school started. :C

I have better things to do with my time then learning, lady; like, watch children's cartoons of speedy blue hedgehogs who eat chilli dogs! XD

I think the idea is that he's more of a comedic character as opposed to the SatAM Robotnik. Dr. R had his funny moments, but he was a much more realistic villain for the cartoon, which suited a more dramatic and serious cartoon for children.

When I think of Sonic's arch-nemesis, I think Dr. Robotnik rather than Eggman. When I think of Sonic's love interest, I think Princess Sally rather than Amy Rose. I guess it's just which version you grew up with.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaRaMa-Artz In reply to Metal-Skotty [2012-06-01 22:54:38 +0000 UTC]

That's the problem. Realistic can't fit into cartoon, but cartoon can fit into realistic. So you start first with the cartoon and once you're used to it, and by used to it I mean being able to draw him in every possible angle and pose, then you start adding realism to him until to reach the point where there's a balance between both that looks good for you.
Julian is not a good looking guy, so making him too realistic will gross him out and instead of scary and intimidating he'll simply look ugly as hell.
