About the bottom part, that was meant to be in ChronicSleeper's reply!

No offense taken, and thanks for the compliment. Yeah, maybe in another drawing I'll draw flowers and all kinds of vegetation in focus, but for now, all I wanted to do was to draw a little bird in flight. I guess I'm still exploring different shades of gray with crosshatching- maybe I'm a bit too obsessed with that process and should draw something more figurative in the background, but I really can't say I'm unhappy with how it is evolving at this point... You're absolutely right about the tail and lower body, though, but keep in mind that it is a work in progress!

It's well done, though a little off, well done. If you're looking to improve, perhaps practice drawing birds a little more? The bottom part seems a little off.

That's some amazing detailing right there. I just love those wings and the shades behind the bird.

Great. I love the crosshatching you did to use as rendering.

I love how pen & ink drawings make the final result look so much softer than average technical pens!

That is so true... Bought Rapidographs in college never used them after- they have nothing on quills.

Yeah, I have some Sakura pens but their soft nibs are horrible >_< Pen and ink for the win, they make the lines flow with much more grace and less accidents!

Yeah, the problem with quills is when you don't pay attention to the strokes, you can splatter the ink. That hasn't happened to me in years, but I remember the frustration of that happening when I started using them. I have to admit that it is now my favourite medium.

Yeah, this is certainly a problem, especially when you think the artwork is coming out good

Yeah, it does take time to control, and lots of practice, but the payoff is worth it in my opinion. Some times it can be a desirable effect- it can add an expressive touch. One of the ways I have found to control splattering is to control the amount of ink you let in the quill at one time. If you have too much in there, either take a tissue to get the excess out, or just scribble a little on the side. But also, the control of the pen strokes is important, as is keeping the quills clean...

I came out with the same conclusion about not letting much ink in the quill. And yes, I totally agree with you!
