Description

“Hmmm…” Nicolas murmured in a lazy stretch, shuffling fingers through his dark auburn curls. He gave a glance at the fascinating figurine that stood upon his nightstand, giving it a smirk. It was something that he found in the snow almost two days ago. A pine carving statue of a nutcracker, a traditional Christmas piece. But what got him the most about it was that it was a female.

It was a beautiful one he had to say. Her cloth uniform navy and red with sliver trimmings, along with a silver sword resting at her hip in its harness. The name ‘Jeanette’ etched into the weapon’s holster.

Nicolas picked the statue up once again and drank in her features and details, finding himself studying her more. He couldn't help it. She was such an intriguing piece.

Her carefully painted turquoise eyes, her golden blonde hair stitched and styled slightly past her shoulders. The classic nutcracker hat fabricated on top of her head. She looked like a beautiful yet powerful figure. One that held a story to her existence.

“What I’d give to see your story.” He whispered to himself, placing her once more onto the nightstand. With a small yawn, he sunk further into the warm abode of his bed. It was getting late, the night settling promptly. Pulling the covers up, Nicolas blew the candle’s gentle flicker out and tucked himself in to avoid the gentle winter chill of the room, quick to fall asleep in soft rumbles.

Gentle chimes of midnight sounded, the Christmas lights softly glowing within the living room. The tree twinkled as the presents from friends and family sat underneath it. As the final chime cried out, a flash of light came from the wall, in the shape of a small archway. The light glowed over figures and toys around the room, Nicolas’ collection of things over the years, awaking them with life. Tin soldiers marched out of their boxes, as well as statues clambering out of their decorative location.

Forms emerged from the doorway, rats. Rats with opposing worn uniform pieces charged the figures with the slashing of swords. The sound of clashing metal and gun fire rose quietly through the air. A battle between the two had begun…

The soft light shimmered through the cracked bedroom door, resting faintly on the newly favored figurine.

Jeanette blinked, her pine frame now moving on its own. With a turn of her head, she heard the ruckus downstairs. She looked over to the sleeping male’s face. It looked peaceful, at rest. His curly reddened brown hair wild on the pillow. Jeanette climbed down off the nightstand, her black boots quietly hitting the floor and heading towards the cracked bedroom door. She pushed it open alittle more, to fit through.

The slightly opened door now had a small stream of light rested on his face, scrunching lightly at the intrusion. With a small groan, his sleepy eyes fluttered open, resting upon an empty stand and a moving shadow.

“Huh?” Nicolas was quick to sit up now, throwing the comforter off of him and followed the form. He slid his slippers and robe on as he staggered down the stairs, only to find a lively show. A full blown war was going on in his living room. His eyes widened at the sight, the emerald orbs now on his little female nutcracker. Jeanette. Her wooden person was so full of life, her swinging her skill into the mix with a valiant look of bravery blazing in her eyes. She seemed to have done this before. Nicolas was shocked at what was happening before his very eyes.

Jeanette gritted her teeth, lunging her sword at the rats invading the male’s home. “Yer not welcome here! Get lost.” She stated towards her opponent. The largest of the rodents, doubling in Jeanette’s size. A rat, tall and lanky with a battered crown and royal cloak. Worn golden beads hung around her neck. She held a twisted and sharpened wand in her clawed hand. The Rat Queen.

“I’ve had enough of you!” The royal rodent hissed at the pine doll.

Nicolas racked his hand through his dark curly hair and let out a gasp, his jaw ajar.

Jeanette’s features gave a surprised look at the male’s presence in this. Then back to block the Queen’s blow, pushing her back alittle. “Nicolas! Get back!” The tiny female yelled out at him, her small wooden form between the Rat Queen and him, in a protective manner.

The Rat Queen smirked wickedly as the little nutcracker was distracted by the towering male and his safety, her whiskers twitched. She took the opportunity and lunged at the figurine, grabbing her by the neck and head with her double-in-sized rat hand. She rose her off the floor with her height, then threw her towards the blazing coals within the fireplace.

Jeanette’s wooden body rolled across the floor, the heat intensifying. Above her left eye and shoulder sizzled, lightly burned at the close proximity of the glowing orange and yellow stones. The nutcracker hissed through her teeth in irritance, her wood slightly darkened.

Nicolas then walked through the minuscule battle, parting ways. His slipper covered foot received a stab from a rat in rage, but lightly kicked him away. His attention was towards his tossed nutcracker female.

“Hey-, You ok?” He knelt down as his hand encompassed her chest, raising her up off the ground, and set her back onto her feet.

“Fine.” Jeanette said as her feet were placed firmly back onto the ground. “Get outta here!” She stated towards his large form as her sword blocked another blow from the Rat Queen.

“Let her go!” Nicolas snarled at the queen, charging in irritance of the way this rat was treating his things, especially now that they were somewhat alive. Even if they weren't, still not right. Queen or no queen.

The Queen then saw the man quickly closing in, causing her to wave her crooked wand with a practiced chant. “Dubitem magnitudine!” An eerie green glow formed at the tip of the sharpened point of her wand, the glow transferring from her wand to him, taking effect in mere seconds.

Nicolas stumbled backwards at the weird hit at his chest, landing on the floor at the impact. The world around changed in an instant, Nicolas blinking at the sudden new height. “What the-?!” He shrank. He was now suddenly the height of the rest of his toys.

"Well well... Not so brave now are we?" The Queen cackled wickedly as she now came towards the small male, his bravo depleted due to the unexplored new size. He scooted backward as she towered over his shaking one. His eyes widened as his heart thudded wildly in his chest.

“Hey, varmint! Yer fight’s with me!” Jeanette yelled at the large queen as she charged her again.

“Yer little doll is getting’ on my nerves!” She snarled loudly, turning towards the pine doll. Her focus back on the nutcracker, the queen hissed at the figure’s persistence, throwing her rat arm across and thrashing Jeanette aside.

Nicolas got up as she was distracted, stomping down onto the enlarged rat’s tail. She let out a wail as he ran to his little Christmas doll.

Jeanette got up looking at Nicolas, then grabbed his wrist to pull him along as the Queen charged again at the two in rage, inches from snatching the male. Reaching a large box, Jeanette bent her solid hands to help him up. “We need higher ground.”

Without question he followed her order, his foot in her hands as she pushed the shrunken male up. Once up, he grabbed her wooden and cloth arm and pulled her up. Nicolas let out a huff as he stood back up, the two looking at each other for a mere second before the Rat Queen broke between them, slashing her wand into the box.

"Aahhieee!" Nicolas tumbled back, his hand catching the edge and himself before sliding off the box completely from the force. He gripped at the corner of Christmas wrapping paper and cardboard. “Uunnnhh…” Nicolas grunted as he tried to pull himself back up, the slick wrapping paper making it tricky to get a solid leverage.

“Aaahinn-!” Jeanette gritted as she took another hit from the large rat, the wand clashing against the sword within her grasp. Her black boots lightly skidded backward at the force.

“You fool! Enough of this!” The Rat Queen rasped in a loud tone. The queen blasted a magical energy towards her, Jeanette dodging, the sword knocked out of her reach in retaliation. The nutcracker stood her ground. “Give up…” She smirked crookedly, whiskers twitching.

“Never!” Jeanette growled, attempting a dash to reach her sword.

The royal rodent's pale tail threw another blow to the doll, tossing her to another box.

The nutcracker was fairly quick to recover from the solid hit, throwing a punch at the large rat, her fist-fighting just as strong.

The Queen's tail thrashed out again, then her claws slashed at her soon after, pushing Jeanette down.

“Jeanette!” Nicolas called out, half-way back up the slippery box’s side.

The queen grabbed the tiny wooden girl, lifted her once more in a final victory. “Yesss~.” She hissed as Jeanette writhed in the clawed hand around her neck and head. “Finally~.”

Nicolas gasped in horror at the sight.

Jeanette’s small hands pried at the claws, the rest of her tiny frame dangling at the height, her over the edge of the box.

The Rat Queen gripping tightly to the pine figure, not caring about the small burns on her face or shoulder. She enjoyed the moment of dangling her precariously, watching her booted feet move around trying to get away from the dangerous height.

Nicolas gave a final thrust of strength and pushed himself the rest of the way up, dashing over to the gift box they were on and tackled the oversized rodent.

“AAAGGHH!” The queen wailed and hollered, dropping the wooden nutcracker back onto their box to get him off her.

Jeanette gave a huff, getting back up for action.

The Queen bucked, eventually grabbing his waist and threw the shrunken male off her back, resulting in him rolling towards the edge of the box.

“Nicolas!” Jeanette called out, running over to the skidding male. He wasn’t going to stop in time before falling off.

The force of the Queen’s throw caused her to trip amongst her own robes, toppling over the edge of the gift box in a curdling scream.

“Ahhh!” Nicolas yelled out as his form fell from the edge, falling over with nothing to grab this time. Pine hands grabbed his wrist, stopping his drop. He looked up, catching sight of his little nutcracker pull with all of her strength, pulling him back up. Back to the safety to the top of the box, he smiled at her. She had to be the bravest and strongest woman he’d ever met, even if she was a pine Christmas decoration.

"Does it hurt?" He asked, his hand reaching for her darkened fire spots.

Jeanette smiled with a shake of her head, ignoring the burned mark on her face and shoulder. He was safe and that was all that mattered.

He then picked up the sword, what once was a wooden piece, now a real silvery weapon. “I believe this is yours.” Nicolas said as he handed it over to her crafted hand.

“I thank you for yer help.” Jeanette smiled as she slid her sword back into its holster.

The tall clock tower chimed, announcing the time in soft bells. Suddenly, the world around Nicolas began to fade. “Wait-! Don’t go!” The male said to the wooden doll, her too fading away. He grabbed her hand.

She smiled warmly up at his worried face. “You’ve set me free. I’ll always be with you.” Her solid hand gave his a gentle squeeze, before saluting him in honor, then she was gone.

“No!” Nicolas shouted, everything fading around him, him eventually surrounded in blackness.

Nicolas gasped, sitting straight up in his bed with his hand gripping at his shirt. He blinked with a huffy breath. He was in his bedroom, in his bed. “Was it all a dream?” He questioned aloud, bearing his thoughts. He then drew his acquired gaze over to his little nutcracker on the nightstand.

His eyes widened at the sight. Then he smiled warmly. A little wooden stand, where his Jeanette once stood. He picked up the small wooden disk as he pushed the covers off, his feet now on the floor. “Thank you.” A tear slipped from a green eye, lightly dropping onto the wooden stand as he wished for her back in his heart. His eyes then went past the coin in his hands to the form suddenly on the floor. He gasped with a smile tugging the corner of his lips.

The small female stirred with a faint groan, her golden hair framing her face. She looked at her hand, then her other. Her turquoise eyes widened. She gave an inhale, her hand at her now beating heart within her chest, hearing her living breath.

“Jeanette?” Nicolas asked as he placed the coin back onto the nightstand, now crouched down at the small figure. She wore the same uniform, the nutcracker hat off her head. The sword back to real steel. She wasn't wood though, like before. He needed to see her face to tell. He needed to see the burns.

Jeanette looked up, revealing the burned marks above her left eye and her shoulder. Not burned wood, but replaced with burned skin. “Hey Nicolas.” She smiled, eventually meeting his features.

“I knew it was you!” Nicolas smiled brightly as he scooped her small frame up, hugging her tiny life against his chest. She gave a small giggle, her living person now gently smothered in his arms. “My Jeanette.” He whispered, looking over her new form.

She was no longer wooden...
