Description
EDIT #2: I have swapped the image out from the photo I took minutes before the original. It has a slightly better composition and DOF. Comments are welcome!EDIT: I wasnt 100% happy with saturation of the sky, as =Alex37 pointed out, it was a little over the top! I also cropped slightly to improve the composition.
My #1 FAVOURITE from this holiday! It seems a shame to put it up before all the rest but I want to do it chronologically!
I think this is the best photo I have taken! The title is kinda self explanatory... that sunset was just... POW! I was on a high for hours after these photos!
The sky was seriously nearly that bright! The polarizer helped with contrast but it was still the most spectacular sight!
Really high res with 3 images stitched [][][]

Yeah I was thinking I would like something like that but now I don't think so. I have applied for a few jobs but haven't got any call backs. I am studying a diploma course in photography at the moment anyway so I am a student

Yeah, main hours for them is outside uni time... like behind the counter, checking tickets... mundane but most un-skilled work is!

Wouldn't be too bad I guess. Hey random question but I've just posted a poll on which laptop people prefer for performance and value, would do you say?

do you use just a polarizer? i've been thinking about investing in some other filters, i've got the basic polarizer and ND but there are so many others out there, have any suggestions?

I used a CPL, GND4 and ND8 for this. My suggestion is get Hitech filter system with a couple of GNDs. (gradient neutral density) What ND do you have? I have a 10 stop B+W ND1000 which is a lot of fun!

i'm not even sure...i think it might be 4? it says...sunpak 67mm nuetral density 4x. they were some cheapo's my parents bought from best buy. i guess i also am not really what the purpose of them all is, i mean i know what polarizer and nd are for, but why gradual, b&w for a color photograph? and why stack? why use so many? i haven't had a lot of experience with filters...as you may be able to tell lol, if you are busy or don't have time to explain, maybe point me to a good reference website? i'm eager to learn!

Ok well... ill just list stuff off.
** B+W is a brand of filter... quite a good one and its very Neutral (cheap NDs give a colour cast - usually magenta)
** You will have an ND4 which is 1 stop darker. My ND1000 is 10 stops and an ND8 is 2 stops
** The use of ND filters is to slow the shutter speed or gain the aperture you want.
** GNDs do the same but they are only over half the filter, this is to equalise a landscape, the sky will be 1 or 2 stops brighter than the land, so unless you want a really dark and boring foreground, you will want a GND - DO NOT BUY a round GND... they dont allow you to move them up and down to position them on the horizon. That is crucial. There are a few systems, all doing the same thing, holding the rectangular filters infront of the lens.
** Stacking is done because you may want to slow the shutter speed down, polarise reflections or sky and equalise the sky/land all in the same shot - so you stack the filters to get all of their effects.
Hope that helps a little - I would go and look at a couple of articles Andy Mumford has written on filters here and here . You should also check his gallery out - =AndyMumford
Cheers!

Personally I am not a gerat fan of this. It is heavily reliant on the sky for imapact because you havent quite nailed the composition (you are close). Unfortunately I really dont like the sky because of your processing. I know some people like colour this saturated, but I think its a bit OTT to the detriment of the shot. I love how the sweeping line in the cloud is echoed on the shore

I changed the processing on this too, better? Little crop, I think it helps the composition. Thoughts?

Hi Alex, I have finally got around to processing the other version of this, slightly different composition, let me know what you think [link]
If you think its better, I will replace this one with it.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Alex37 In reply to mark-flammable [2009-01-28 13:48:22 +0000 UTC]
the composition is definitely better, the processing is not as good. The saturation on the new one is a little higher and certainly I would watch the dark blue around that bit of cloud at the top of the sky. Definitely worth redoing though because that comp is much better.
Alex

I did actually feel a bit that way too, about the saturation. I was planning on going back to this. There is 2 others with similar but different compositions so Ill see if they look better or not.
Thanks for the advice Alex
