Description The XB-70 Valkyrie is a bomber designed during the cold war to deliver a nuclear weapon deep into Soviet territory. With a top speed over Mach 3 and a service ceiling over 77,000 altitude it was able to outrun any interceptor aircraft of the day. Not only does the Valkyrie feature incredible performance capabilities but it is also quite beautiful and is one of my favorite subjects to paint.

Prints are available through my website, www.markkarvon.com.

This is as close to an atmospheric rocket as we've gotten to date. SCRAM jet.

Actually it is powered by six turbojets; not scramjets. I don't think there has been a manned aircraft with a scramjet as its main propulsion.

I wasn't aware that the XB-70's wings could bend like that!

Yes, they were able to be locked in three different positions. It provided greater stability at high speed and enabled the aircraft to ride the supersonic shockwave.

I'm glad to know this little tid bit!Β  I fell in love with the design decades ago when I first saw a photo of it in National Geographic!

Great work, love the space sky view.

Most fleet aircraft have equivalents in other countries and services.Β  The Valkyrie was a totally unique creature.Β  You also have to appreciate that it is named for a host that chooses who lives and who dies in battle.
Unfortunately, she was production cancelled in proto stage.Β  But, with all of the supersonic work at the time, the two protos were completed purely for research.

Thank you. Much like it's namesake, the airplane is a fascinating legend.

I always have the impression that this is a paper plane turned into an awesome heavy and superfast machine. It is so sad that their story came to that bitter and abrupt end. This "angel" was and is pure history…

There is typo on the picture, Vakyrie instead of Valkyrie.

The 1950s and 60s is one of the best eras of military technology. From tanks to warships to planes, there were so many unique designs and concepts that looked like they’re from science fiction

Yeah, there was a lot of experimentation and willingness to try different ideas.Β
