Description The Challenger II is the United Kingdom's current main battle tank. Built by the British company Vickers Defense Systems, the Challenger II has been in service since 1994. The Challenger 2 is one of the most heavily armored and best protected tank in the world. The tank served during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and has the distinction of being the only tank to serve in that conflict which did not receive any losses due to enemy fire. Our depiction features a tank in the markings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 7th Armoured Brigade.

Definitely an imposing design. I love that you even put the gimpy on top of it.

By the way, since you've probably done a lot of research on these vehicles, does the Chally 2 actually have that much armor, especially in the sides compared to the Abrams, Leopard 2 and such?

The Chally 2 has this much armor. Probably more since the time I did this piece.

Ah. Do you remember what it was in terms of RHA, or just generically "heavier than an Abrams or Leopard 2?"

markkarvon In reply to John-234 [2012-07-24 00:35:56 +0000 UTC]

Modern tanks do not use RHA. Modern armor is composite. I think the Challenger II is actually the lightest of the three.

The Challenger II is the heaviest Main Battle Tank in the 21st Century. The M1A2 Abrams and Leopard 2A7 come pretty close.

John-234 In reply to markkarvon [2012-07-24 07:03:37 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I realize that but I meant the approximate RHA rating. An Abrams allegedly has the equivalent of 1500mm RHA in its frontal arc, for example.

love the tank, just wish it was lighter on its' tracks. both this and the m1 are too heavy for any bridge anywhere. most bridges are max. 40 tons, these are much heavier than that!

I like this, I'd like to see a Royal Dragoon Guards Chally 2 painted though they wouldnt commission such a painting. Though there is an existing paint job that could be painted, it doesnt have any markings only flags called TRFs or tactical Reference Flags/Flashes. The RDGs actually tested the Challenger 2 in Oman on Operation Sarif Sareea 2 where 50% of the Challenger 2s sent on the were out of operation within 4 hours. The powdery sand clogged up the powerplants and was a massive headache for the MoD. Fixing them added the problem of acquiring spare parts because the orders of the tank had just finished delivery. Or theres Op Telic 5 of which the RDGs were part of Iraq.

Thanks. Fortunately the problems with suitability in desert operations were fixed by the time of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Cyklus07 In reply to markkarvon [2011-06-26 00:47:27 +0000 UTC]

oh absolutely, the MoD wouldn't have sent out 120 Challenger 2s into Basra if it hadn't been for the exercise in Oman 2 years before the Iraq Conflict in 2003. But still its decision not to desertise or even buy the Chally 2E was a big mistake. Not only did they have to buy the kits but they also had to pay for the replacement parts. An unnecessary gamble I think.

The Challenger... One of Europe's Clones of the M1M2. They all are Damn Good...

markkarvon In reply to Sampug394 [2009-04-05 02:06:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, the Challenger was developed and went into service at about the same time as the Abrams. The Abrams actually uses the British developed Chobham armor. I think the fact the tanks look similar is more that they both use the same armor and not a matter of trying to clone any one particular design. It's more a matter of great minds think alike I think. They may look the same but underneath they are different beasts altogether. For example the Abrams uses a gas turbine engine while Chally uses a diesel.

Sampug394 In reply to markkarvon [2009-04-05 02:15:54 +0000 UTC]

Really! Never knew the Challenger used a Diesel Engine... Also Figures that the Abrams is Not 100% "American Made"...

markkarvon In reply to Sampug394 [2009-04-05 02:36:01 +0000 UTC]

Not only does it use British designed armor but it uses a German gun. The Abrams originally went into service with a 105mm gun but was later upgunned with the German 120mm gun built in the US under license.

Folks like to tout the Abrams as the world standard and it is but they should not discount the excellent designs from Britain and Germany. US armor was inferior for decades to British, German and Russian designs. Britain especially has consistently been a world leader since they invented the tank in WWI.

Wow. They Things they Don't Tell you on TV... Good to know it has a RELIABLE German Main Gun. And Yeah, Even the Germans Ran in Fear for a While in WW1 When the British's Tin Can Beast Rolled down the Battlefield...

There are no words to describe the look and the color scheme of this extremely impressive machine. The Challenger 2 is a truly a force to behold on the battlefield and you did it justice. And even though I love the Abrams, I don't here near enough about the Chally.

Well done sir!
