I would love to know, how do you make those eyes so amazing? Is it a marble? Also, how big usually are your sculptures and about how much clay do you use on each?

Marble? No. Looks like sculpey, and from the tool markings id say a lot. This one looks near 1:1 or so, but its hard to tell. Either way its an amazing job and I too like the extra work he puts into eyes... actually I pretty much love all this mans work.
Thank you for sharing, Mr. Newman!

The rough surface and precise anatomy make for a kinetic and appealing style.

Chavant is an oil base clay. It doesn't harden. If you fire it it will melt. It has to be molded and cast in another material to get a finished piece. It comes in different grades from soft to very hard. It doesn't need much of an armature for support.

I thought the roughness of this would be unbecoming, but I actually find it very original and awesome.

nice subtlies in the movements. Play between the soft and the hard. I would love to see these 'in the round.'
cheers

Seems like a great Blade piece, even though I know it's not supposed to be.
Have you tried Castiliene?

MarkNewman In reply to Tophoid [2007-05-04 17:37:15 +0000 UTC]
No I haven't tried castaline. I've messed around with it once. Didn't like it. I'm not a big fan of the waxes.
I'm more into clay.

I'd need it to stay solid for action figure/toy prototypes, so I hear Castiline is perfect for it. I'm also curious about Firm Super Sculpey.

I say....is that someone famous or a commission? (I have to admit that I was completed fooled by the clever eye sculpting thing too....I honestly thought you were using eyeballs and I was a bit disappointed in that.... BUT now I find out that even that is sculptedness...then surely that is worth at least two hand shakes and possibly a pat on the back....but then I am English...so you'll have to suffice with a large handshake or two!)

Nobody famous. This is part of another line of busts designed by Thomas Blackshear. I also sculpted a female to accompany this one. The sculpture of the Grandmother holding the baby "Embracing the future" in my gallery is also part of this line.

Is this just oil-based clay that you use to cast from? I'm interested in your process.

MarkNewman In reply to boyyy [2007-02-07 15:52:29 +0000 UTC]
This is all oil base clay. Chavant NSP medium, to be exact. The clay is wamed for pliabilty then built up. Carving and adding. Tooling the surface.
