Description
This is the node set-up for the hair shader I use in blender cycles. The yellow nodes are the tunable input variables.
The overall set-up is a hair variant of the PBR material as described in this video . The Fresnel setup in the blue frame is from that video.
The diffuse BSDF and Glossy BSDF used in the PBR material in the video are essentially replaced by the Body reflection and Gloss reflection hair BSDF nodes.
The reasoning behind this is equivalent to the one in the video, that hair is not a metal, such that it must show a pure white reflection towards the edges. This creates the nice shimmering effect.
All the off-sets from the hair shaders are set to zero. This is tunable off course, but I think it is better to change the lighting set-up if you want a different reflection from the hair. In that way the hair reflection corresponds to the other reflections and shadows in the scene.
The transmission is a bright version of the hair color, as shown in the purple frame.
To decrease render times for the hair shader look at this forum thread and video .
Feel free to ask any questions.

Thank you very much for sharing this. I was experimenting a lot with hair shaders, but never was really satisfied with them. Yours gave me some good tips

Success, I duplicated your shader and wow does it work nice.
Thank you very much. Now to try to get some hair styled to show it off.

Great! I could show you some settings I use to get the hair texture (wavyness, stray hairs etc) if you'd like.

I'm still horrible with styling,
but I've been tinkering with your shader and Filmic-blender
just a few tweaks on the settings gives some fun results.
