Description
The System Links represent the greatest technological achievement known to humankind: a means of interstellar travel, seemingly avoiding the insurmountable barrier of the speed of light. Little is known about these structures other than their ancient age, far surpassing the length of human history and likely even that of the Confluence.
Each System Link is comprised of structures like vertebrae, arranged in a chain of several million miles. They are known to reach up to three-hundred degrees around the orbit of their local star, forming an almost complete ring of cosmic proportion.
The machinery within is fueled by lances of solar energy, sent from platforms close to the star. In a few systems, the inner solar rings of the First Builders still survive, providing near limitless reserves. Elsewhere, power is provided by the younger client species of the Confluence in varying measure. The only System Link supplied with energy entirely by Terran structures is that of Sol, where this purpose dominates much of all rebuilt interplanetary infrastructure.

A ship traversing between systems will be accelerated along the entire length of the gate, this journey itself taking up weeks at a time. As it reaches relativistic speeds, the vessel and closest segments are surrounded by a shroud of plasma. The processes within remain ill-understood. By the end, the ship vanishes in a flash defying the known principles of the conservation of energy. It will only manifest again at the set twin-gate, where the same process in reverse decelerates the vessel and sets it free at the end of the chain.
